question about cymbals

im looking at getting a new crash, and ive found some pretty good deals, but theres one thing i dont understand.

some crash cymbals are "medium-thin"
i dont know what that means, as far as sound at least. whats the difference between a "crash cymbal" and a "medium-thin crash cymbal"?

by common sense i think that a medium-thin crash would be a bit thinner than a regular crash, and for that reason i figure that it wouldnt last as long, right?

thanks,
butter

Re: question about cymbals

Heavier crashes have bigger power but take more energy to get the sound, and thinner crashes are more sensitive, take less energy to get sound and are normally smaller in volume. That being the case a rocker would typically want something in the middle as far as thickness, a metalcore drummer (or real heavy hitter) would typically want a heavier crash, and a jazz or blues player would typically want something of the thinner variety.

The rule of thumb I have always used is the louder the music, the heavier the crashes needed to play behind it. Also, remember that a polished cymbal will be a brighter sounding cymbal and a raw cymbal with be a darker sounding cymbal.

Re: question about cymbals

Thicker cymbals tend to have less sustain than thinner cymbals.
Medium thin would be a mixture of the two.
Not too thin,
Not too thick.
Allowing for a quick attack, good sustain and sensitivity.
They tend to be higher in pitch than say heavy crashes or rock crashes.
Medium thin crashes are typically used for light rock or rock music.
I have seen some of them in metal music as well as jazz and blues.
Medium thins take a higher level of skill and craftsmenship to make because
of their complex nature.
They last pretty long too.
and can sound amazing!

Re: question about cymbals

And now, how about the explanation of the Crash/Ride cymbals. Would the judge rule Sustained or Over Ruled?

Just go to a drum shop and try before you buy.

Re: question about cymbals

I was in the same pickle.
(I don't like pickles.)
I was looking at Xs20 medium thins.
But when I saw The Paiste Alpha's, I was blown away.
I'm not saying get the Alphas, But go with the ones you like and fit's
your music. What style do you play?
I played the Xs20's and they where really good. They had a very explosive sound to them.
The only thing I don't like about them is the bell size. Especially the ride.
Thy aren't shiny either. But, go with what ever you want. It's up to you.
