What size cymbal next?

Hello all,

I have included what i have on my current Mapex Saturn kit which i adore. I am not asking for brand or any of that as i know it is all by what the drummer likes and i have the brand i like but i am receptive to anything. What would be 2 good sizes of cymbals to add? I know eventually I will add a rack because i expect to add about 6 to 7 more cymbals and stands are not going to cut it in the end with this size arsenal for me. I would rather carry a rack vs stand for this many cymbals. I am trying to create my own unique sound and i think i have a good start and will be on my way.

I am open for any suggestions on size. What is one cymbal you cant do with out size wise that i do not have for all of you experienced drummers. I thought about a set of crashes 14'' Custom Medium Crash 2 of them to get it off my checklist. Should i go with 2 others instead for now any suggestions? I am now a Meinl guy and does not want to change brands but i am receptive as always to any input that will give me just as a high quality sound. I would rather spend that extra dollar on quality and sound as it makes a wonderful difference to my kit and sound. Meinl are high quality especially the upper dollar series. I must say the smaller cymbals i have has given such a distinctive sound which is good and has given me great ideas for making music with the drums. Plus Meinl gives me a 2 year warranty with any cymbal not bad in my opinion.

Currently Own
14" medium hi-hats
20" medium ride
16" medium crash
14" Filter China
12" in splash
10" inch splash
8" inch bell

My goal to obtain:
8" Byzance Splash
14" Soundcaster Custom Medium Crash (x2)
8" Byzance Splash
18" Byzance Medium Thin Crash
17" Byzance China (Prototype)
16" Generation X Filter China

Thanks guys and gals even though their a few of
you. Keeping drumming!

Re: What size cymbal next?

To more complete your cymbal range...
I would say the 18'' medium crash.
Considering you only have 1 crash, an 18'' would be perfect. I have
a 16'' and 18'' crash, but they're Paiste Alphas.
I personally think having a 16'' and 18'' crash, go together like peanut butter and jelly.
(But I'm allergic to Peanuts.)
I would also say get those 2 14'' later.
Thats actually what I did.
I have an 16'' and 18'', and I'm getting 2 14'' for christmas. Those cymbals will complete my cymbal range. Good Luck man!!

You mostly have everything you need, I would recommend the 18'' Crash, second would probably be the China

Re: What size cymbal next?

Thanks guys. I might get the 18 and a 17 crash or just the 18. I love all the little splashes will get a 6 and maybe another splash. I love my 8" bell and 12' crash so much. I can agree the 18 would make a perfect fit followed by the two 14'' crashes. I spoke with my drum store (the one i bought stuff from) and they are shipping me a Mapex snare stand, single pedal, and 2 sets of trick sticks that i told them i wanted and a free t shirt which will be good for cleaning my drums I was so excited that i forgot the Mapex snare stand and pedal when i was loading up my gear . I have an extra snare stand though and my screaming demons. I may just trade the old stand and pedal for another drum accessory. I even got 4 sets of sticks but for the troubles they are shipping the t shirt and extra sticks for free .

Would it be stupid to get a 17 and 18 crash? I would then have a 16, 17, 18 crashes now and then add two 14's later. Thanks for the information guys keep all ideas coming. I think those little bells and little splashes give you so many options on sound.

Size of cymbals, doesn't really matter, by that I mean you don't have to get all odd, or even crashes, if they sound good together then by all means get it. 1 Inch can have distinctive sound differences, and I don't think it would be dumb to get 17, and an 18. I used to have a 16 Z Custom Crash, and a 17'' A Custom Projection Crash, and they sounded well together

Thanks for the reply. The 18 will be next i might get the other china but i currently have one that i really like to slam with double bass and snare. I found a deal on a paiste 2002 power crash at a local pawn shop including a boom stand for 89 bucks. The cymbal is in very good condition almost excellent. I only saw one mark on it which probably can be removed with a cleaner. I wonder if anyone has one of these on the forum. It cost roughly 250 new cymbal alone. What do you think? I like the sound i just wonder how it would mix with the 18 Menil Cymbal I have. I think i might get it Monday. I can pick up the Menil sound caster 18 later that i really want. Would a 19 match up pretty good with the 16 in everyone opinion? I ask because there is a 19 there as well.

OMG!!
A 2002 in that condition with stand for $89?
Thats amazing.
Those are great cymbals.
But I don't know how well they would mix with Meinls.
Meinls are more of a high-pitched while Paiste's larger cymbals are deeper in tone.
But the sizes being 18'' and 19'' I think those would mix nicely.
But there is a problem, being that the cymbals are so close in size, they may sound very similar.
But the 16'', I don't know if they would sound good together.
Being now that they are so far apart in size and Paistes larger cymbals are very deep
sounding, and Meinls are more high-pitched.
So, I would say take those cymbals to the shop and see how they sound together.
If you like it, Get them because you will almost never see that kind of deal again.
Good Luck and happy drumming!

Good idea. I figured for the price the stand is worth almost half that. The stand look new by Pearl. I think i will pick it up it is just to cheap of a price to pass up.
