Re: Secret Formula For Cymbal Making Re-discovered

I must say that this has been very interesting. I first started reading your post about the secret formula very intrigued not only about the story itself, but your uncanny ability to tell a good story! I felt like i was reading a book from a experienced novelist and even though it was a very interesting topic i can't deny that you did a great job of draging me into the story. Do you have previous writing experience? possibly studyed in college? Anyway to stay on topic ive read every post currently on this thread, and even though it took me a while, i must admit that there were some other very interesting topics brought up (and some very uneccesary, rude and nasty remarks made between supposed forum brothers). One of the major topics other then cymbal alloys was cymbal manufacturer's and how good they are. I noticed that, not once, was Mienl mentioned.. This happens to be my favorite cymbal maker and because i am such a inexperienced cymbal buyer i would like to ask all of you moderaters(And Drum Master 1) your opinion on Mienl. Good and Bad experiences with the company plus any thoughts on how they make there cymbals please?

One more thing to add, thankyou tainojim for that so true statement. This happens to be one of my biggest and most important beliefs and i believe that that should be something for all people on this forum to remember.

Re: Secret Formula For Cymbal Making Re-discovered

I think Meinl is a serious, first-class cymbal maker right up there with the rest. That said, cymbal buying remains a very personal activity based on the sound preferences of the buyer. So whether you like Meinl or not depends on your tastes.

Thanks, Der. When you agree with me, I know I'm on the right track.

yaa Gold is not an alloy but an element.............. Nickel is an alloy having good mechanical properties.... Nickel alloy is corrosion resistant and has good ductility with magnetic properties....

Sorry my friend, but nickle has no magnetic properties at all. It's great for chrome plating.

Nickel is an element, not an alloy, and nickel is ferromagnetic around room temperature but not above its Curie temperature of 355 degrees Celsius.

Re: Secret Formula For Cymbal Making Re-discovered

Well, if weight is the key, why not add lead? Are these age old cymbals thicker perhaps?
If cymbal makers actually started using gold in their formulas, especially in these economic times, no one except lottery jackpot winners would be able to afford them. We have criminals that are stripping new and abandoned houses for the copper pipes in the plumbing systems.......let them know that cymbals contain gold and you will need an armored truck to transport them to and from whatever vault you will need to keep them in.

Mienl is actually spelled M e i n l, especially if it is your favorite cymbal maker.........or is there actually a cymbal maker that employs the spelling you used.
I am always willing to learn about cymbal makers that I am currently unaware of.
