18" Wuhan China

Well I just bought an 18" Wuhan China and hit it for the first time today. What I heard was something I was not expecting. It sounds like a mini gong and rings forever after the hit and is crazy loud. I guess I was looking for that trashy sound that does not keep ringing after the hit. I have heard since these cymbals are hand made, every cymbal sounds a little different. Did I get the wrong size for the sound I want or is there a diff brand that sounds better than others?

I ask because this is the first China I have owned. I have played a few on friends kits but never really paid attention to brand or size. And theirs sounded good.

I am a fairly new "kit drummer" so this cymbal experimenting is somewhat confusing as far as finding a good sound.

Any suggestions?

Wuhan chinas generally have the shortest sustain out of any china, I'm very surprised you thought it rang for a long time. Also all chinas are loud. heres a video of my wuhan china tell me if yours sounds similar to mine.

Our school has that cymbal too. I know what you mean with the ringing but it isnt all that noticable if your playing over top of it. also it is very loud but is that bad? And to stop this from happening in the future just play that cymbal befor you buy it. Even if its not the same one it just has to be the same type and size. It helps

I don't mean to be a jerk, but one good piece of advice is to always play a cymbal before you buy it. Did you?

Other than that, could you lay something on the cymbal to dampen it? A strip of rubber or a piece of an old belt or something? Cut a hole in it that would fit over the wing nut.
Probably not much help.

Re: 18" Wuhan China

Hey thanks guys, you are right, I know I should have hit the cymbal before I bought it but the closest "music" store is about 40 miles away from me. I've never used chinas before, so I took a chance. But I will see how this cymbal sounds mixed in with some real music soon hopefully. Oh and Luke sorry i cant see your video cause my internet connection sucks since I live out in the sticks.

But ya, I did dampen it with some felt and tape and now it sounds even worse, almost like hitting an old empty 55 gallon tin trash can. But I beileve experimenting will be key here..thanks

Thats ok I once had dial-up internet and it was painfully slow I'm sure if you play it a lot you will appreciate its sound more. That's what happened with my B8 cymbals

Also when you start playing w/ a band, a lot of those little issues become almost unnoticable. You probably won't hear the overring over the guitars. Snare buzz is the same way.

Try Some Moongel absolutely the best resonance damping product on the market. It's very flexible you can add as many strips as you like. You can move it around your cymbal to find the most advantageous spot for it. You can cut it so you may use a full strip here and a half strip on the other side of the cymbal. Buy some it's some really useful stuff. T
