can colored cymbals ever sound good??

just thought id start a little discussion here from a thought i had... any ideas??

i was looking through the drum kit photos, and there is this kit in the gallery named the ROTO KILLER.
pretty beastly looking set, i could spend a lot of time behind that thing. if you havent seen it, heres the link:
http://www.drumsetconnect.com/drum-k...ndex.php?n=121
http://www.drumsetconnect.com/drum-k...ndex.php?n=122

anyway, the guy has RED cymbals. it looks awesome, but i cant believe they can sound good!
all the colored cymbals that have ever been on the market, pitch blacks from Zildjian, the slipknot black alphas and white 2002s from paiste, sound TERRIBLE!!

so i think, either this guy has bad sounding cymbals, or he found some company that makes colored cymbals and doesnt sacrifice sound quality.
if he did the latter, then his cymbals must have some kind of innovation about them. the only way i know to make a cymbal any color other than brassy or goldish is to PAINT IT. right???
if his cymbals arent trashcan lids, how are they colored and not painted?

so here we are. how could one color a cymbal without coating it with a layer of paint? is it possible?

Re: can colored cymbals ever sound good??

At first, I thought it might have been the light.
But you're right, those are colored...

I'm going to take a stab at this.....
Maybe an EXCESSIVE amount of B8?
Or maybe the paint layer is so thin that it only slightly interferes with the sound.
He said that they are "Harpy" cymbals. These cymbals originated in brazil and in 2006, renamed to Krest cymbals. They do indeed color there cymbals. Krest makes a variety of colored cymbals, like red, blue, and of course black. They have HC series, and LC series.
But Krest, no longer makes colored cymbals. They do have a lot of innovative qualities, like partially machine hammered and hand hammered cymbals. They have there own sound- edged hi-hat. Which they call them NAT hats. So with those qualities in mind, they saw the coloring doesn't alter the sound. But it seems unlikely.
They do look very unique.

I looked up some Krest cymbals, and they're freakin beautiful!! Don't nkow exactly how the coloured(I'm canadian) ones sound, but they're really nice in green, purple and red!! The purple are especially unique!!

They do look real nice.
I love the purple too.

I know it's not colored, but It gives you an idea of what they sound similar too.

Re: can colored cymbals ever sound good??

i didnt realize he had listed the brand of the cymbals in his post.

i have often come across krest cymbals on Ebay, i always just assumed they were cheap off brand cymbals that had some paint... and sounded like crap.
i never paid much attention to them.

i like the sound of the cymbal in the video, i might actually look into that specific one. i am very picky about my chinas. i have only found about 4 that i actually like. now we just need to find a vid of a colored one

It's gonna be hard to find one, they don't make colored ones any more.

Every Cymbal has a different use and purpose. Only the person that selected it should have tryed it before buying it.

If the sound of a colored cymbal sounds like what you need, buy it.

Re: can colored cymbals ever sound good??

i see. well he either doesnt care too much about sound, or he DID find cymbals he liked, whether it was a personal choice or the the colored cymbals really didnt sound bad. i am thinking he sacrificed quality for visual effect, though.

i just wonder if there is a way to color a cymbal without painting it...
