Cant decide on what cymbal

Im trying to decide on some mid range cymbals. This has turned into a more daunting task then choosing my kit. Budget always sets the tone so I am looking at the sets that thro in a cymbal or 2 to maximize dollar since I need them all. I have always been Zildjian fan but learned Sabian was formed after the Zildjian family spat so is there that much difference in quality on equal lines or will Zildjian name cost more? My price point is around the Zildjian A-customs or Sabian AAX. I really like the Hand Hammered version but they are considerably more. Is there that much of a difference between the middle range and say the K- Customs? Will an intermediate drummer like my self notice any difference? Is cymbal choice all about the sound you like regardless who made it or out of what?. Im getting a brand new Mapex Saturn would it be taboo to look at used market. If this thing looks like i hope they do may be a sin not to have some shiny cymbal jewlery. Give me your thoughts Ive done so much anal research to the point Ive made things worse..

Re: Cant decide on what cymbal

Cymbal choice IS all about the sound you like regardless who made it or out of what.

Many feel that the more expensive cymbals sound better. This may suggest that you buy the best, most expensive, cymbals you can afford. You need to head for the store and let your ear tell you if this is true for you.

Head for the store and listen, taking any cymbals along that you already own and plan to continue to use. You want the best sounding cymbals you can afford. They'll be around for a long time, hopefully. And you want your new cymbals to sound OK with your used ones.

You can absolutely buy used if the like the sound of a certain cymbal. You can shine those old cymbals up.

There are a whole lotta brands of cymbals out there these days, including some new brands that have their merits. It might pay to go to more than one store because they may carry different new brands.

Hi I saw your ad and what you should do is go to a music store and listen to the sounds of the different cymbals, then look them up on e-bay and see the difference in price. I bought 4 cymbals on e-bay and saved almost $180 on all 4. Just remember what the cymbals
you want are, and price to compare. You might want to try Americanmusical.supply com They usually have some good deals. GOOD LUCK SLINGERLAND

Hey Meahal19!

Welcome to the forum! Nice to meet you. Listen,..while I agree with Dtxt & Slingerland above, I have have to say it always pays to give your local music store a shot at your business before buying on ebay, or one of the online sources. If you have a really reputable store in your area, chances are they will meet or beat the online prices. An added bonus to this approach is that you get to see and try the product before you buy, and you will most likely be able to establish a really good rapport with the dealer. I always give the folks I bought my set from a chance at my business, and they have turned into a really helpful source for all my drumming needs. I just had to replace a bolt and nut in the memory lock for my Hat stand, and my dealer did it for free along with a couple of spares. Just sayin'! Oh, FYI,..you can't go wrong with the Sabians. I play thier XS20's and really enjoy the quality and sound they produce. If you buy a boxed set, they will have been tuned in the'Vault', and nicely compliment each other tonally.

Cool thanks for comment. I agree 100%. I will buy from Ressurection Drums in Ft. lauderdale they are top notch and beat everyone price. They ordered my kit as well and blew everyone out of water. Ill hit the Guitar centrers and Sam Ash for selection but will drive the the hour and half to order from Rezdrums.com. I have seen the "Vault" term used on several brands what does that mean?

They match tonal qualities of each of the cymbals in a cymbal pack. They have made it sound cool and mysterious by saying they take them to the "vault" to be matched.

Re: Cant decide on what cymbal

Thanks for all the input. I went out and tried all types. I ended up getting a set of Paiste 2002 Wilds. Didnt add Paiste to mix originally due to cost but picked some real nice ones up on ebay. saved about $500 from retail. Good deals if careful and not in hurry. They are a little more harsh and aggressive sounding but just made everything else sound like a jazz cymbal. Im sure I will add others over time for variety but so far happy with my choice.

Re: Cant decide on what cymbal

As has been stated before, take your drumsticks to your music store and hit and listen to the cymbals, it's all in the ear.

brand name and how expensive the cymbal is makes no difference to the sound it produces, buy what you like, what sounds good to you.

as a point you can go to the store and say i like the sound of this one, go home ,find it online, buy it, get it delivered only to find it sounds nothing like the one you tested.

cymbal buying should be done in person so you know you are getting exactly what you want.

hope this helps

Thanks Drumstick I did exactly that. Dont know if you saw my post right before yours. Sound is what led me to the Paiste 2002. Which wasnt an option is original post. It was definately personal preference I was even advised against them by my instructor because of sound. Gotta go where yor ear likes it.
