Favorite Size Crash ? One of the greatest thing about being a drummer is the virtually endless array of choices we have to customize our Instrument. One of the worse things about being a Drummer is the virtually endless array of choices we have to customize our instrument. Like most of you I preffer the first sentence in this posting, I wouldn't want it any other way. Each of us in his/her endless search for "our sound" nothing is perhaps more sacred more personal more, more well just more than Cymbal selection. In this and other drum forums I read, I don't think another aspect of drumming fires up our passion more than our Cymbals. I love my Cymbals. Don't get me wrong I love my whole kit from my double kick pedal ( DW5000) to my remote HH ( DW5000) to my Drum heads ( Batters- Evans G2 Coated, Reso's Evans G1- Clear, Kick- Aquarian super kickII) and so on. But nothing quite inspires me like my Cymbals. I currently use around 20 or so Cymbals in my set up. They are from various manufactures and of course many sizes and weights. I got to thinking That no matter who makes it I always seem to be most attracted to and are most satisfied with 16" crashes. Weight seems to have almost no effect on me as far as satisfaction goes there's just something about a 16" crash that to me is perfect. To me a 16" crash is the perfect size crash. Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking any size crash they all have a role to play. But if I had to choose just one size crash for my kit it would be a 16" one. So my brother/sister Drummers if you had to choose one size crash for your kit what would it be ? What is your favorite size crash ? Again I'm not talking Brands or lines/series of cymbals let's try and leave that out. I left out my brand prefrences for a reason. Simply based on size do you have a personal favorite or prefrance ? Maybe you have no favorite at all. For me it's a 16" all the way. What say you ? T. |

Re: Favorite Size Crash ? I would agree, the endless combinations of different sounds and effects available is what makes us all unique in our sound.
My current crashes range from 16" to 18" but I must say that my favorites are the 16s. They have crisp fast attack and shorter sustain, I love 'em! |

Re: Favorite Size Crash ? I honestly don't think I'm experienced enough to have a very solid opinion on this topic, but after reading the title of this thread, before reading any of it, I immediately thought, "16 inches". I think I probably just like MY 16" crash, but other 16s are what I get most interested in if I have a chance to look at/hear other cymbals. Since I read the thread, I see that you both like 16s best as well, so it will be interesting to see how this results with other members. Maybe 16 is the popular size.
C&S, do you know how to add a poll to a thread? You don't have to, but I think it would be cool to have a vote on sizes. |

Re: Favorite Size Crash ? Butter,
Excellent Idea !! I posted this pretty late last night and I didn't even think about adding a poll. Again thanks for the input, this will add a nice new dimension to this posting. You mentioned you didn't think you were experienced enough to form an opinion. First I will say I applaud your honesty and frankness, It's refreshing to meet ( I assume a newbie ? ) who is not a know-it-all. How long have you been at it Butter ? Good luck and thanks again for the poll idea.---- T |

Re: Favorite Size Crash ? I personally don't have a favorite size, but I use my 14" as a top hat, and use a 18" the most. I have 5 crashes. |

I wouldn't call myself a "newbie I've been playing for 3 years on set and 2 more before that in school band, but I usually don't count those middle school years... so compared to some I am a newbie, but decide for yourself
Thanks again and good luck to you too. |

Re: Favorite Size Crash ? I'll be honest with you--I really feel like I need a diverse selection of cymbal sizes in order to fully express my style on drums. Then again, if I had to choose ONLY one crash cymbal, it would be my 18" thin crash. Yes, it is loud enough to make a drummer deaf but my technique is pretty good so it's not like I have to bash the hell out of it every time. |

Re: Favorite Size Crash ? I love that Warm, Juicy sound of my Sabian 16" Crash. Nothing sounds better to me!
14" is nice as well but little too high pitched to get my Vote |

Re: Favorite Size Crash ? I like the 18" crash/ride, but a 16" works better for some songs. |

Re: Favorite Size Crash ? I like 18's for sound and feel, and my 2002 18" crash is my main crash when working off the hats, but my 18" medium gets a lot of work too. I also use a 16" 2002 for mostly snare crashes and catches as it has a farily short sustain. If I could only have one it would be the 18" medium as you can also crush (crash-ride) it. Very multi-purpose. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
