Re: what are best 2ply heads for gretch britch kit

I have a Gretsch Renown Maple and it has Evans G2 heads on all the toms, and I love it! They have great sustain, great attack and they bring out the tone of the shells wonderfully. I was thinking of swapping out to Evans EC2's but decided against it (don't fix it if ain't broke!)...

Anyway, you'll hear a ton of opinions I'm sure. Remo Pinstripes are nice, but they muffle a lot of tone in addition to the overtones they are designed to "filter" out... Those birch shells will sing nicely in spite of the Pinstripes, but it depends on the sound you are trying to achieve. If you can, try them out (I know its hard to find a drum shop with after market heads on the drums, but this is really the only way to find out if you like the sound).

Here is a video of a guy with a Gretsch Renown Maple and G2 heads--mic'd up of course--and they sound great. Mine sound like this too (after hours of tuning).

Re: what are best 2ply heads for gretch britch kit

The evans EC2's will give good sustain on a quality maple kit. Might be worth a try on your kit.

Re: what are best 2ply heads for gretch britch kit

I have a year old TAMA Starclassic Performer B/B set that came with evans G2 clears on the batter side and G1 clears on the reso side. After six months of hard playing, I decided to try the Aquarian Super 2's on the batter side, and Aquarian Classic Clear's on the reso side. I couldn't be happer with the sound and tuning ability the Aquarians give my set. Also, I swapped the evans heads that came on my Starclassic snare with an Aquarian Hi-Velocity on the batter side. My snare never sounded better. You might want to try the Aquarians. I'm sold.
