Jazz Drummers

I'm looking to broaden my horizon a bit more. If you're a jazz guy/girl let me know who your favorite jazz drummer is!

Re: Jazz Drummers

Here are some players and the bands they did recordings with.

Peter Erskine is a great drummer and educator. He played with 'Weather Report' and has his own trio.

Joe Morello. (Dave Brubeck); Teaches drums privately. He is sought after.

Elvin Jones (John Coltrane, McCoy Turner)
Art Blakely (Jazz Messengers)
Tony Williams (Miles Davis)
Carl Allen

Mike Clark (Herbie Hancock) - great and early jazz-funk drummer
Steve Gadd (session player) - this guy is so musical!
Dave Weckl - Fusion drummer of 80s/90s/00s - real pioneer this guy
Vinnie Colaiuta - Fusion style drummer. (Sting, Zappa)
Keith Carlock - (Sting) - My flavour of the month, syncobeat man. Jazz tinge.

The swing-time era name drummers like:

Buddy Rich
Gene Krupa

Not strictly jazz, but these guys were involved in fusion which is regarded as a branch of jazz:

Your Welcome!

I went to a BC clinic back at a music fair at earls court, london. I remember I asked him a deep question: 'what are you thinking when you solo?', he couldn't answer, smiled and laughed. What I meant to say was how do you use your rudiments and be creative and think at the same time. Still that is quite deep too, even if you can pull it off.

BC is very humble. He used to take public transport in london to get to clinics and go to eateries with other drummers. Quite an approachable person.

Re: Jazz Drummers

spot on!He is very down to earth a normal guy....solo's have to come from the soul hence the term...sol you can tell when a solo is plaid with no emotion or feel. It becomes sterile. It has to have a start and a finish which is a signature the middle is let it flow and take it somewhere and back.
So who is your big influence and why. I could have pick 100s like the other drummers so just pick one...

Re: Jazz Drummers

So many good drummers in the jazz world.

My flavour of the month is keith carlock.

I've been playing his synco groove style for awhile now
and been inspired by it. Just listen a few times and you
get it. I hear Peter Erskine play this synco-beat years
ago. Just glad someone is capitilising on it. And yes I
can play like this and more...I'm good at it
This board is your gig Bull.

I don't understand the word soul to be honest.
I can hear a drummer sing? If singing is not from the heart or soul?
One of those drummers that comes to mind that can sing
is Steve Gadd and Joao Palma. The previous video I posted; watch
Steve Gadd break out into his famous mozambique beat during the battle.
This sings, in the midst of all the dynamic expression that goes on.
Joao Palma on Jobim's waters of march. The well placed syncopation;
hihat and and brush work.

I have watched BC do solos, they can be deep, maybe soul?
Use of dynamics, fast, slow, that sort of thing. More expressive?
BC is great. Great playing with Mahavishnu; spoton.

Re: Jazz Drummers

Great solo, He is not a familiar drummer but i will look more. Its great seeing younger drummers evolving it keeps drumming alive and kicking...Thanks for sending it... its a nice groove he has got going on that. you think your going away from the structure and then he reels it back in a bit like fly fishing.. I learned a great deal by just playing along and listening to Buddie Rich he got me into the whole Jazz thing. Art Blakey a legend, Steve Gad is also a great drummer. it sounds like you have a great deal of knowledge so respect Zap..Any question or knowledge on Jazz i will certainly be dropping you a thread....

I can attest to this, he's very humble and approachable in person but when he's playing.... holy...
