Drum Recording

Hell all, I am a newbie here. My Name is Trevor G. and I have been playing drum set for about 4 years now. I came here to learn about drums talk about drums and hopefully get some tips here on how to improve and become a great drummer. I have a standard 5-Piece Groove Percussion set with top Remo Power Stroke 3 heads and stock bottom heads, I have one 15" Sabian crash and a stock 17"? ride with sounds like a sick cat. All comments are welcome.

Man, that sounded pretty good to me. Few small stuff-ups in there, but nothing you'd notice on stage and I'm sure you know where they were.

Your set up sounds pretty nice for a begginner set.

Are you in a band yet? Who are your influences?

Nope

No, no band. Thanks for listening, I still have tons of learning to do. Influences are Assaf Seewie and Neil Pert. I would classify my drumming to styl as more 90's than anything cause I love that "Sound" of music.

Cool, That's where I began. Major Grunge freak. Moved onto Tool, Korn, RATM and SOAD.

My first influences were Dave Grohl, Dave Abbruzzie, Jimmy Chamberline, Ben Gillies, Chad Smith, etc.

Thats cool, I am just so into the 90's sound and kinda always have been, I have recently been praticing Soundgarden - Fell On Black Days, Burden In My Hands. Stone Temple Piolets - Interstate Love Song, Sin. Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Scar Tissue, Soul To Squeeze. My main goal is to be able to play the song all the way through and nail most of the cymbol hitz. A lot of drummers out there (That are young and dont play in a band) say they can play songs but they can only play the main beats and cant seem to play the rolls off's or even nail the cymbol hitz. SO my gaol is when someone says to play a song that I say I can play, that I can play it all the way through and have it sound right... Im a ways away from reaching that goal yet... Oh I also want to improve my double kick.

I don't think you're as far away as you think.

My advice, don't try copy the version perfectly. Let it flow out of you. Try focusing more on the structure of the song and what you think it needs as you play it. Add your own flavour.

You'll find it's easier to get all the way through then and others will think you're better for the slight (and well executed) changes.

You've got the chops dude. Go for it.

I had a listen to you clip you posted. Firstly you play on top of the beat. It creates a rushed feel. This suggests to me, that you need to work on some shuffles. I think you are a little too stiff. As in your shoulders. Relax your shoulders and drop your arms loose. Then just rise them up enough to be able to get the sticks on the snare..( but keep your back straight and shoulders flat.)

Its great that you are playing along to popular music. This will certainly assist your already good perception of time. However, you must remain solid in this timing and I did notice you strayed and sped up which is a common fault.
The beat and time gets locked into your brain after time and practice. I like to think of it as the sun coming up and the sun going down philosophy.

Try using your left foot, or the foot not used on the kick drum to keep time. As an example your left heel or right tapping out the time. Practice your timing to a second hand on a clock. So a get a nice big fat standard clock with a tick tick second hand or a quality metronome.

Its not overly about the sound of the drums, as engineers have many tricks in a live scenario to eq/compress/gate and make you sound good. Though your kit is more than adequate to do live shows.. good choice.

As far as other drummers are concerned. There is always someone out there who is full of themselves and will brag up their ability. In my experience these people are all talk and no action.
I like your attitude in that your open to suggestion and you seem like a genuine person, this will hold you in good stead in the industry and you career.

I agree with Skin and while trying to copy all the songs exactly is great its also time consuming and frustrating. Unless you have a guitarist or singer who can nail it to the same level as the original recording. On stage and in real life its all completely different. Hence your own interpretation. It really takes the pressure off.

good one....
