Matt Smith /Free Jazz Duo

This is a whirl at collective improv with my dad, who is pretty well known for this. We did these this afternoon.

I used to play in a jazz/funk group!Sometimes I long to go back to my roots and do more accessible stuff, but I love the metal!

I like your Stigmata. There are some nice ideas there for sure. But although I respect the skills of the metal players it's just not for me. So I probably won't be playing metal anytime soon. Besides I'm a one pedal guy (lol). Thanks for your warm comments. You have always been so supportive and you're obviously an honorable man.

Yeah I just saw what that giveme fella left in that other thread months after the fact. Dude has too much time on his hands.

You know how I feel about your playing so there's no need to add anything else just I love your playing... I'd take as my drum teacher though, even if at my age I could be your father.

Matt, regarding you playing metal, maybe you could consider something else in rock like something funky from RHCP or something from Led Zep, The Police, The doors anything rock of your choice, I sure you could nail it down and we would see your awesome abilities and versatility.

Thanks mind. I appreciate that. Yeah, I'm up for most anything and back in the 9th grade I played in a Zep cover band with Moby Dick and everything. I liked doing the Bonham stuff my way. Bands like what you mention call me all the time, but I'm usually hampered by my age, which isn't as much a problem in Europe.

But one of the problems you have with metal are all the guys who see it as this private club with all its social stuff, bias, paranoia etc...and I hate to say it, but some BS that goes with the persona that the real guys don't actually have. I roomed with Tim Yeung at a NAMM show last January, and he was the most down to earth guy you could ever meet. But some of his fans were pretty out there.

Now they've got all these different classifications as if to keep others out, even within their group. I would just as soon steer clear of that, respect the skills of the better guys, and let that be it.

Here here Matt, couldn't agree with you more. So glad to have you back here btw. I love the new videos. You seem to become very entranced when you play, yet the level of communication between players for that calibur of jazz must be off the chart.

Again, really glad to have you back.
