Cool New Guy

Hello everyone. Ive been drumming for 20 years now although i stopped playing for 8 years due to military obligations. But now that im out I my wife suggested that i should go back on drumming again and so I did. My current setup is a Tama Rockstar 5 piece and Sabian B8 cymbals. Im planning on upgrading them here soon. Prefer Tama and Sabian products.

Re: New Guy

Thank you for supporting our troops especially our drummers/soldiers. My wife has been very supportive about everything. She and my daughter sits down behind the kit every now and then and bang the hell out of em, which I think is awesome! They're favorite cymbal so far is my AA 10" splash. They call it the baby cymbal. Anyways, im a metal head all the way!! Im thinking about taking jazz drumming lessons. Any suggestions on any good jazz drummers?

Jazz is a very huge field to cover depending on what type of jazz.

Jazz has allot of three and five counts.

You can get quite a few great tips on "Jazz Drum Basics" from YouTube.

Also funk and jazz tend to follow each other.

Now if you wanna study some of the really old greats, like Charley Parker, Dizzy Gillespie. Those were the heavy hitters of jazz. Ella fitgerald is another one.

For rock jazz, Mitch Mitchell.

Re: New Guy

superkruper, I take that as a great compliment.

And as far as Jazz goes, it really comes from the heart. Born from the blues deep down south. And from both was born Rock n Roll.

I was lucky enough to grow up as the music changed fromera to era. In my neighborhood I heard from the street corner doo-wop, to the Mickey Mouse Club, to Phsychadelic Rock.

I saw CBGB's and The Filmore East come and go.

So embrace todays music, for it will morph sooner than expected.

nicotanker, Also learn some brush work after you master the rudes. One of my favorate brush jobs was done by Mitch Mitchell (Rest His Soul) in the song called "Up From The Skies". I still haven't heard anything like it today.

My two wooden knickles.

Re: New Guy

Mitch Mitchell was truly a great drummer who's root's were founded in jazz , like many others around that time , Ginger baker , John Densmore , Mick Avory who kinda "crossed over" to the rock , pop scene .

Yo Nicotanker - Howdy from Dublin - Ireland!! - we have great respect for the US service men and women - this side of the pond - tough job dude - take my hat off to you bro!!

In terms of Jazz, the one great thing is, that the old school drummers such as Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Joey Jones are still so relevant today - and of course more modern Dave wEckl for Latin/JAzz - super technique -

There's a few excellent resources online for general lessons - check out » Free Drum Lessons - Learn How To Play Drums Online an excellent start for reading drum score, picking up the basics for all styles inc. Jazz - what level are you at? The secret to good Jazz besides timing is Rudiments - you have to nail these - not all 40 but certainly singles, doubles and paradidle family for sure! -

Basic tip -
Counting an 8 bar triplet in swing
One- trip-let, two trip-let, 3trip-let etc played on the bell
Kick and open hats on the quarter note (One, Two ec)
Snare played on the + (and) so + 1 tripl-let + 2 trip-let and so forth
Now play around with the snare on any of the trip-let-parts and you have basic swing. Hope tis helps dude Phil.
