Hey Jed, I notice on my bass it hits a little low. I'm sure center is important, But center it horizontally, and the best you can vertically. Think about it. I played in the high school band, when I was young, I hit those drums all over the head! I still made the beat, and never broke a head. I hope this helped. And Good Luck!

Hi Jed89. Can you describe the problem again (maybe post it in a different part of the forum where more people will see it)? Is the bottom of the beater rod sticking through and hitting the skin when the felt beater bounces back off the head? In all the pedals I've had I usually have to tighten the beater at it's longest point, so there's no amount of rod showing through the bottom at all. And that's how you get the felt beater to land as close as you can to the centre of the drum. Incidentally, you don't want to hit dead centre because that just leads to a "dead" muffled sound.

Hi,

Think about the bass drum beater the same as you do with drum sticks, both have a perfect fulcrum which, when found, will give the best rebound possible.

It definately doesn't need to hit the bass drum dead centre, It just needs to have a great rebound when it does.

Post some pictures if you are still having trouble.

Re: beginner

A little below center should work just fine. Buy a little round disk to place where the beater will strike. It will preserve your head a little longer. Any drum shop will have them. There are self adhesive...peel and stick.
short note on buying sticks...see if you can roll them on the counter...if the tip wobbles don't buy them (warped). Also (and this may sound strange)...tap them lightly on the top of your head. Listen for the tone of the wood. The higher pitch the sound the denser the wood is. The lower of course less dense. Higher pitch wood will break less then the lower tone. I have been using the Regal Tip Jake Hanna model for years....simple my choice in sticks.
