Glynes Checks In

Hey Dudes and Dudettes,
Fun to see some familiar names here.

For those of you I haven't met before:
I'm rock's most unexpected girl drummer ... had my first lesson on my 54th birthday, and been at it for 2-1/2 years. Have had the enormous privilege to work with Kenny Aronoff (this is all his fault ... saw him drumming and said, 'I want to do what that guys does'! as if!); Billy Ward; and Cindy Blackman. Lucky to be drumming in the Seattle area, with Donn Bennett's Drum Studio, where just about everybody who's anybody on drums shows up at one time or another. Alan White, Michael Derosier, Matt Chamerlain and Jeff Kathan and local ... kinda blew my mind to find myself standing and talking about golf courses in B.C. with Alan White!!
Have been in a basement band for a little more than year ... they're all seasoned musicians, which was hugely intimidating, but surprisingly I'm not the weakest link. Saw/heard audio and video from our first (and only, so far) gig, and was amazed that I wasn't horrified at myself!
I'm a rock-n-roll baby, but have been dragged into the blues, and love it. Thinking about giving country a try.
Still on my Pacific beginner's kit ... swapped out the tin-can snare for a Pacific solid maple; and piled on the Paiste 502 cymbals, plus a couple of Wuhan splashes and my very favorites ... a set of Celtic Bell sizzle cymbals.
My pride-and-joy: Kenny Aronoff's Zildjian 22" China Boy Low that he used on the Fogerty Blue Moon Swamp tour in the 90's ... autographed, with a personal note to me!
Away from the drums, I'm married almost 6 years to a former British Sailor I met online, and have a Dreaded Day Job as a Project Administrator for a civil engineering company. I'm a writer (fiction and my autobiography), photographer, and really truly do have a stamp collection!

Hey! Backatcha All!

I forgot to mention my latest "big distinction" ... I've made the pages of Modern Drummer magzine!!
August issue, toward the back, nice article about Woodstick 2006 ... grab a magnifying glass and take a look at the group photo ... that's me, kinda center, in blue, decapitated by Bernard Purdie's boom mike! You can even make out my little yellow support duck, Trudibelle, sitting on the bass drum!

Considering my lifelong penchant for walking away from photo ops, this is pretty exciting!! And could well be the only time I can ever say I'm in MD!!
8-)

Wow! Sorry I didn't answer sooner! Between the Dreaded Day Job and jury duty and other pesky RL junk, I kinda got lost!

Yes ... it was my second year participating in Woodstick (playing 15 choruses of We Will Rock You with 532 other drummers is just too phenomenal for words!); and this year I served on the volunteer committee to help make the whole thing happen (which is why I was able to snag a spot 3rd-row on the aisle!). I'll be volunteering again next year and hope to be in charge of the reserved floor spaces, because the guys really kinda screwed it up!

I also took part in the 'night-before' Drummers Hang for the second time ... last year I made my public debut and played with my very first real live musicians at the pre-Woodstick Hang ... this year I got to play in front of Bernard Purdie ... and got a real good review!

It's especially meaningful for me because in 2004, when I'd only taken one lesson and didn't have a clue, I went just to see what Woodstick was all about, and it blew my mind. I set my first major drum goal to be on the floor playing the next year ... and I did it. Of course, I also set a goal (time unspecified) to one day be on the stage wth the celebrities ... I'll let you know how that goes!
