Smile Hello, newbie here!

Hi all,
As suggested, I'm just writing to introduce myself...I started playing about 4 1/2 years ago, but really haven't had time to take it seriously (or money for lessons). Now that I'm done with school, I seem to have more time and am looking to improve my playing...and this forum has some really cool links.
I always wanted be a drummer, but my mom made me play the trombone instead because it was less "noisy." Funny thing is, I was a crappy 4th/5th chair trombonist and sat right in front of Johnny Rabb during high school jazz practice...
Anyways, I was wondering if anyone out there can recommend a good, fundamental beginner's book. When I first got my set, I bought Carmine Appice's Realistic Rock and played through it, but I really want to look for something that will help me with fundamentals and stick control (eventually I'd love to play more jazz). I've read that the book, aptly named "Stick Control" is a good text, but more for an intermediate-level player. I consider myself more of a beginner - I really wasn't able to play much while in school. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Gooner,

Welcome to the forum! Stick control is an excellent book to have. I would suggest :
http://www.vintagedrum.com/item/Alfr...CD-DY-QIU69860

Getting started on Drums (Tommy Igoe vhs/dvd)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...v=glance&n=130

there are many others, that's all I could think of off the top of my head.

welcom to the fourms.
I wish that I had some great books or videos to tell you about but I dont.

the only ting that I can tell that is going to help you further your drumming is to get a copy of the 40 esental rudements (sory I dont have the link for that page but it is listed on the fourms) but I think that they are a great place to start drumming. it will help you with stick control, and sticking in general, and there are a lot more benfits to them as well but I dont have all day to list them all.

but welcom this site is full of great drummers in all feilds of music and we would all be more than willing to help with any questions you might have.

Welcome to the forums man. I dont have any books to reccomend, but take a look around the education section of vicfirth.com. You'll learn lots.

Smile Thank for the warm reception!

Thanks for the suggestions...DrummerMom - that book appears to be the sort that I am looking for! VicFirth.com - will check it out!
As for the rudiments - I was able to download a copy of the American rudiments (I forgot the website that I got them from) but I haven't really learned any of them yet (aside from the paradiddles). I guess I've got some work to do!
Thanks to all!

If you can play a single paradiddle you can play these:

I really enjoy paradiddles!

Hey Gooner,
Welcome to the forums! Rudiments are really a great way to expand your drumming and open new windows to your playing. Good luck!
