hello, im carl i just found this site's link on a vistalite web site, so i thought i would sign up, i got my first drum set at the age of 12 in 1968, built a hodge/podge set 5-10 yrs later, and finally had enough money in 1979 to get a ludwig octa-plus white cortex/double bass, been playing that set since, until 6mts ago..i packed them up and stored them so i could build the set i wanted since 74 in high school,,amber vistalite bonham set...i found a 70's set in neat perfect condition from frankie v in new york. a real 70's set not a re-issue..frank claims that the big 26'' bass was never played. the set looks like it was made yesterday, unbelievable 9.9 outta 10... so thats where it started, next i got the 70's atlas cymbal stands(flat trypod legs) and the atlas hi hat ,,even thou i already had the tube stancs from my 79 octa plus,,i wanted to make this set 100% like bonzos...next i got the 70's rodgers hi hat,,,the ludwig 1400 flat leg stand to mount the gold tone cowbell on.. then it was time to get some paiste's---i never owned or hit one before so i was in for a real treat,,, i packed up all my 35+ yr old zildjians and got brand new 2002----- sound edge 15'' hi hats----24'' ride----16'' 18'' 20'' crash cymbals.... then i got the 38 '' symphonic gong, brand new from paiste in switzerland,,,,they were out of stock so i had to wait 3 mts for them to make it,, making sure they gave me the same round stand bonzo used... i already had a tympani from high school i paid 40 dollars for back then,,,its a old 1920 vintage copper ludwig 26''machine tympani,,,but i wanted foot pedals no hand cranks(even thou bonzo used a machine and a universial) so this is the only thing that is not accurate,,,only because i dont want another machine tymp,,,so i bought a 29'' and a 28''symphonic models 70's vintage,,,the only other thing is the ching ring,,,i had the same one bonham had 20 + years ago,,but its long gone, i used 2 double layered ching a rings and made a longer hi hat rod out of brass 1/4'' stock and threaded the end 1/4x20...so the double/ double rings wont get smashed like i did to that old one,, my snare isnt a 402 but its a 6.5x14 chrome 70's supersensitive model which i got from mr ludwig sr,,i met him at the chicago plant in 1980,, the 402 and supersensitive are basically the same except for the drop down strainer, which i like better,,,well thats about it, i can post some photos of my ambers and octaplus sorry its such a long post for a new guy, looking forward to meeting you guys,,,,,,,,carl |
