Littledenny I'm an old guy just getting back to drums after not playing since my high school days. 30 years of college and serving in the Army really prevented me from playing, but I'm trying to make up for some lost time. I played snare only in HS, so this is really my first attempt at playing a kit. I'm not as rusty with sticking as I thought I'd be, but getting the feet to cooperate is a new challenge.
I bought a set of Pearl Exports, just before they became "vintage", but I'm having a riot with them. I have no plans to join a band, or even gig: I'm happy for the moment just playing for my own pleasure. My challenges are being extremely tall, and a lefty. I've experimented a bit with a righty set-up and decided that's not for me. So my kit is radically lefty.
I am still experimenting with set-ups, cymbal placement, tuning and adjusting. Long range plans are to learn my mistakes and preferences with this kit, eventually donate it to some up and coming young drummer, and buy a "dream" kit.
On the personal side, I'm retired from the Army, now doing a little free-lance landscaping work, mostly for the exercise. I'm heavy into volunteer work, as a firefighter, First Responder, emergency manager and I lead a search and rescue team. I'm also a swiftwater and rope rescue technician. I find that doing all this "wild" stuff keeps me young, and challenged to learn new things.
I'm open to any comments from other "older" guys (and gals) either just returning, or experienced, especially if you have lefty or tall guy hints. |
