Exclamation tomany

My name is Mike
I reside in southern Oregon but am a L.A. transplant. I Have been playing for a long time, almost 40yrs. Have played with some good players, some have made it in the industry and others have not; some have died before their time. Since I was a little boy music and especially drumming has always been my heart. I remember when I was about 14 or 15 yrs old, I found scrapbook that my big sister had made when she was in high school. It was a scrapbook about her baby brother. ME! I got such a kick when I read the part about how I use to crawl into the kitchen, sneak into the cupboard, and pull out the pots and pans and start whacking on them, I was 3 years old. My first inspiration was Gene Krupa and I am sure some of you will not know who that is so ask your parents or better yet ask your grand parents. LOL! I got my first kit when I was 11 years old, it was a Sonor set, then about 5 or 6 years later I got a set of Gretch's. In 1984 I bought my first killer set if Ludwig’s and it was a killer to lug around, the big lesson there was bigger is not always better, a hard lesson to learn. I am in the process of picking another kit, something that would be good in the studio and that’s what lead me to this website. There is a Gretch Renown kit down at the music store that looks and sounds good, no wraps and a virgin kick, 4-toms, 6 ply. Technology has really changed so maybe some of you guys can help out an old guy figure this out.
Thanks!
MT

Re: tomany

Welcome to the board!! You can't go to wrong with the Gretsch Reknown line. I've got a set of Gretsch Catalina's that I'm very happy with, and the Reknown are the next step up form that. There are lots of choices, what type of wood is the shell pack on the reknown set you're looking at. I know a lot of people are recommending Birch for recording, but I'm sure with the right studio set up you can make most any drum record well. Good luck hope you find something that works well for your needs, and let us know how things go!!

Re: tomany

Hey, Church drummer thank You for your reply. The kit is 6-ply American rock maple, and I have talked to guy @ Pro Drum Shop in L.A. Ca. and he was saying that it with the technology of drum makers these days that the whole Maple vs. birch thing is not an issue as long as you are going with a well-known maker. I am still going to keep looking and I will let you know what happens.

Thank!
Blessings!
Mike T
