Talking Re: what are good heads 4 metal

I suggest Remo Powerstroke 3 batter and Ebony front head with a 8" hole on yr BDs and Pinstripes on yr batters with Diplomats on the resonant for yr toms and a Controlled sound batter on the snare and the thinnest resonant you can find,I use a Evans super thin with 42 strand wires. thats my setup arrived at by years of trial and error but I used to use Premier DS batter but they are not made any more. changin all yr heads aint gonna be cheap but start on Ebay cos theres loads of em on there. keep paradiddlin! Mike

Re: what are good heads 4 metal

I'm currently using evans g2 clear on my toms (g1 on the bottom). This is a popular combo amongst many metal heads. John Tempesta, Danny Carey, Vinnie Paul. If you a tad more focus get the coated, or a lot more focus the EC2.

Emad is a great sounding bass drum head with interchangable dampening on the front. If you like the short attack of drummers like Chris Adler and Joey Jordison, i recomend putting a danmar falam pad on your batter head. It's a little plastic disc that gives you really good smacking feel. And if you're going to put a hole in your reso head, start with a clean 4" hole, then expand if you need to. Once you've made it bigger than 6", you may as well not have a head there, but many players prefer that too.

For snare I can recomend the remo genera power dot. Lots of tone, with just a touch of focussing in the middle. I use standard hazy on bottom.

You can hear the results at my bands site below.

Slappy, how long you been playing? And how long for this style? I'm curious because you have a good round base of knowledge that most don't even try to get past trying different things, be it money or otherwise.

Re: what are good heads 4 metal

I've been playing for thirteen years and hard rock has always been my passion. I have tried a bunch of different things (including heads) but I also do a lot of research before purchasing.

I save money on many areas like hardware so I can more into heads and cymbals, but my main focus is finding the realy good value stuff.
