When Am I Ready?

Hello All,
This is my first post but have been reading them for a while now. I have been drumming for 2 years, practice daily, and take weekly lessons. I am 43 and am wondering when I am ready to jam with other musicians. I dream of playing a gig with a band. How does it all begin? Thanks everyone.

Re: When Am I Ready?

Welcome to the forum Taye Lover. I looked at your profile picture and your kit looks beautiful. The drum store in my area was pushing the Taye drums because they bought out the distributor. They said the great Canadian drum maker Ray Ayotte had a hand in making the drums. How do they sound?

You're ready to jam. The trick is to find a guitarist and bass player or even one of them for that matter who are also interested in jamming for fun. If you have kids I'd put out the word at their school to see if any parents are musicians with day jobs who want to rock out after hours. It helps if you've got the practice space to attract others to come over.

I highly recommend jamming as soon as possible. There's nothing more fun than interacting creatively with other musicians. And man, do you ever find out quickly what skills you need to work on to improve! All of your weaknesses will be exposed when you jam.

Make sure you practice part of the time with a metronome or recorded music. The first thing a guitarist/bassist is going to appreciate is your ability to keep a steady beat. That lets them solo and show off, which they love to do. You don't have to be flashy, just solid (think Charlie Watts).

Good luck!

Hi and welcome, I'm a relative newcomer to this site but I have to say it is very good, great people and expert advice.
I agree with Slingerland, you are ready NOW

The sooner the better really, you have a very cool kit and the ambition to get out there playing it.
Very best of luck.

Yes Ray Ayotte does run the company. The drums are now his creation. They sound absolutely incredible. I compared them to DW, Tama, DDrum, Pearl, and others. This one sounded the best to me. Thanks for the replies.

Re: When Am I Ready?

How would you describe the sound of those drums compared to the others you tried? I've never heard a Taye kit. I've just seen them, and the finishes are truly beautiful. What's the name of the finish on your drums, by the way? Are the drums maple?

I was told Ayotte had a part in the company but that he left a few years ago. Even if that rumour was true, I suppose the drums would still be crafted to his specifications wouldn't they?

Did you test out an Ayotte kit? Again, wouldn't they still be good quality even though Ray Ayotte hasn't been a part of that company for many years?

I'm asking because I'm Canadian and when I raise the cash I think I'd like to buy a Canadian kit. I've never had the opportunity to question anyone who owns a Taye kit before.

Cheers and rock on!

Re: When Am I Ready?

It is a Studio Maple 6 piece. The color is caramel burst. The sound is loud but refined. The toms sound just as good as any I have ever heard. The owner of the shop where I purchased has a 5,000 dollar Ayotte kit and he said it sounds just like his. I would certainly take a listen to them if possible. This is their top of the line set but the cost is lower than most other brands. Good luck.

Re: When Am I Ready?

Thanks for the update Taye Lover. I think I could very well be a Taye Lover too. I love the way they look and I love the price.

I think when I'm ready to buy I'll take in two of my old Slingerland toms and see if I can tell any difference. I'm guessing the Slingerlands will be a warmer, quieter sound (mahogany) but I really don't know. And it's not really feasible to build a bigger kit by buying vintage Slingerland pieces. They're just too expensive, especially when you pay shipping.

Anyway, I want two drumsets so I can teach some neighbourhood kids how to drum. It'd be fun to set up side by side and I can just see their eyes light up when they sat in front of those caramel coloured beauties!

Cheers and rock on.
