Evans Percussion Specialist

Greetings all,
My name is Josh Touchton and I am the percussion specialist for Evans Percussion. This includes Evans, Puresound, and HQ Percussion. i would love to hear from anyone with Evans questions, praise, or concerns. We build the products, but you guys build the brand. I have been playing since I was 8 and am still very active in recording, teching, building, and designing. WOuld love to hear from you!

Welcome Josh! I see 14 people looked at your intro and hadn't responded, that sucks. Anyway, I do use an EMAD system on my kicks. You can see them on the post your pics thread. Used to use EC2's, but switched to Remo clear Ambass's on all my toms. The EC2's are still on my Tama kit, but liked the Remo's better on My Saturn's. I'm getting ready to change my batters. Wanna make a suggestion? My ears are open. What's up w/ the Onyx?

First off, thanks for the response. I think for the Saturn kit, you should go with the G Plus. the Walnut lends itself to a bit slower vibration, so the tone is a bit richer. If you are a coated guy, I'd say go with G Plus top and bottom. If you are a clear guy, go for G Plus on top with G1 on the bottom.
The Onyx is a cool head for heavier hitters and bigger drums in general. On 12 and smaller toms they are a bit boxy at low levels but open up the harder you hit them. They are two plies of 7.5 mil film, but both plies are black. On the Hydraulic, one ply is black and the other is clear. We also use our same coating on the Onyx, but without any pigment. Let me know what you think if you give them a shot.

Wow, man I can't tell you how awesome it is to have you here.

I've been using g2 and g1 clear on my toms for a while now, I play hard rock on a poplar export. I was thinking of trying the onxy, but now I know they're hydraulics, I may stick to the g2's. I was after a bit more duralbility and focus, but I find hydraulics go dead sounding very quickly.

Could you recomend anything else?

Really, they are different animal than Hyd. the Onyx has no oil. They are more open and have sustain. They are just deeper with more decay than a G2. There is a new Emad with the G Plus film (Gmad) as well as an Onyx Emad available in 20 and 22" sizes. If you want something a bit more full than G2's, G Pluses are the way to go. I have some new recordings with the G Plus, can you post those here? Sorry, I'm a bit of an old man when it comes to posting anything other than photos.

I'm a VERY heavy hitter, but a lot of articulation with fils. My tom sizes are-
10"x9",12"x11",13"x11", 16"x16' and 18"x16". Kicks are 24"x20" would love to try a different kick head with plenty of attack and boom. I use a Audix D6 in front, and a Sure Beta 91 inside, the ring is tough to control. Suggestions?

For Heavy hitting i would go with an Ec2 or Onyx. the Onyx will be a bit darker tonally, but the EC2 will give you more attack due to the contol rings all the way around the kit. I am using the Onyx on a 13" 16" tom set up on a 71 Ludwig and love it. I usually go with G Pluses, but darkening up this kit(helped out by the rounded edges) is really a nice, contolled change. For your kicks, take a look at the Gmad. It's 12 mil vs. a 10 mil. on the Emad. For a bit less tone and more attack you might go as heavy as an EMAD2. Look at going with the Resonant Onyx or Remad for the reso head.

Hey Josh I have a Birch Tama Starclassic kit I currently use Remo but I wanna try Evans. Can you recomend some heads? I have a 10,12,13,14&16 toms and a 18x22in kick.My birch snare rings alot.I want to tame it but don't wanna use stuff like rings or moongel.I want the kit to cut unmiced I play in a prog/classic situation.I also have a Ludwig chrome over brass 61/2x14 snare.Could help me out I would really appreciate it Thanks
