Exclamation First timer on the forum

Hi All,
I have been playing drums for many years (>40). I started at 9, practicing to Beatles, cream, stones, etc but was very influenced by San Francisco rock from the 60's & 70s.
I have played in many bands with Grateful Dead influences.

I have played on Slingerland drums circa 1968, but fell in love with Ludwig drums, and Zildjian cymbals.

I currently play on a 5 piece but am looking to get a slightly larger set, for a change.

I love deep rich sounds in a set. I am looking for suggestions for other brands to consider. With two kids in college, price is an issue, but a used set would be fine.

Any recommendations?

Welcome to the forum Mr. Fred Haas.

Always glad to have another veteran drummer here at DSC.

For used drums, have you checkout EBay.com or Craigslist.com?

For that deep rich sounding kit, Gretsch, DW Sonor, Yamaha, and others make good drums.

Good idea if you went to your local music shop to try before you buy. Especially cymbals.

Good Luck to you and Happy Drumming.

Re: First timer on the forum

Here's the story. I am starting to gig occasionally, with a grateful dead copy band. I want something that will fit the sound, but be a complete set (my current set has a replacement bass drum I hate).

So far I have played on a Maypex M series, and a Tama Rockstar. The Tama had a deeper, meaty sound, but it still wasn't what I was looking for.

I am planing to try the following;
Gretch Catalina Maple
Yamaha tour custom
PDP X7
Sonar force 3007.

If I can find them in my price range:
Pearl MCX
Tama star classic

Any recommendations always welcome!

The deep bass sound from the 60's and 70's were the drums made with a 30 degree bearing edge.

Such brands like Slingerland, Premier, Ludwig and Greatsch. These were the big boomers from back in the days.

Today most drums have a 45 degree bearing edge. Do your home work in detail and try before you buy.

Good luck on your venture.

I have read that Gretsch toms have 30-degree bearing edges.
