drummer of the year

I'm not sure if anyone else gets DRUM! magazine but I do and they had their annual drummer of the year poll and john doleyman(system of a down) won. I voted for thomas lang, john is a pretty good drummer anyone have any opinion on this?

System of a Down is a great band overall and I think they have a bunch of great musicians. However, I've never actually heard John by himself or showing off any of his stuff. How good really is he?

I'm not really sure I have never heard him play by himself either, I think that the people that send in votes are mostly young people that vote for the band instead of the drummer, because last years drummer of the year was tre' cool and he is pretty good, but I mean there are other drummers that make him look like a three year old playing

The only thing that I can say about this that I know for a fact that him and that guitar player sit down and they write out all the parts and lyrics for the band and I do mean they write out all the sheet music for all the parts from scratch so the guy has a good all round music ablity.

John Dolmayan is a really good drummer. Hes not out there with crazy fills or anything, he just has a style all his own. Listen to "Revenga" off of Mezmerise for some crazy bell patterns during the chorus. Also the drumming off of toxicity is just perfect too.

Wow, that's a pretty impressive list...

As for John Dolmayan, I heard that in that issue of Drum! magazine he complains about how modern pop drummers suck and that he is the greatest and the most unique drummer on the planet.

What with all these stuck up drummers these days?

Re: drummer of the year

well think about this, we didnt here him say it, it could be sarcasim, he might have been joking around, he doesnt seem like the type of dude that would be stuck-up. but then again looks can be decieving. as for the pop drummers, i dont think they suck, i think they are probably told what to play, most pop drummers are actually seccion drummers, they dont really get to decide what they play so one of them could be just as good if not better then john, they just dont get to show off

Re: drummer of the year

I kinda agree with All Around Musician, it's hard to interpert exactly what John meant. But, if he meant it, and it wasn't just sarcasim, than I think he's a dick. I haven't heard him show off, but from listening to System of a Down song, Toxicity, he seems to transitions well between the mellow part of the song and the more up beat part of the song. And, in Lonley Day, he des a good job blending with the band and letting everyone do their thing. I'm sure it's not the only song he does it in, but it's the only example I could think of. And, I can really respect him for writing the music, too. I took a Music Theory class last year, and it wasn't easy. So the fact that him and the Guitarist can sit down and put the music on paper is really cool.
