For the same reason I need 10 drums and 6 cymbals.
When a drummer play different genres of music, a drummer needs to expand his/hers horizons.

Re: Mike Portnoy's new monster set

And some guys are going back to 4-piece sets to concentrate on rhythm and eliminate flash.

Vive la differance!

How many drummers could play that at one time? Hey -- a new movement! Multiple drummers on one set! Drum sections instead of drumsets! The rhythm field!

Re: Mike Portnoy's new monster set

bozzio pisses me off. he is a great drummer, but every solo ive ever watched him do on his freakin ridiculously huge set is boring. he just rolls up and down his drums and does impressive stuff with his feet, without ever doing anything that sounds good or interesting.
he has an amazing kit, and i have seen him play to his potential, on zappa videos, but he needs to get over his desire to "play melodies" on the drums. the drums arent for playing melodies, they are for playing beats! melodies are a bonus, but not what you should do for an entire solo.
sorry about my little rant...

as for portnoy, last week he became my favorite drummer i know he isnt the best, but i have an obsession with polyrhythms right now, and dream theater and tool have the most songs with polyrhythmic stuff happening.
portnoys kit is amazing, and honestly i prefer it over bozzios. i think the reason for that is my irritation with bozzio is also my irritation of everything he does on his kit. i dunno.
really though, if someone offered me portnoys kit, i would take it, but only use one end. i mostly envy his cymbals. HHX... awesome
