Re: SO, who is/are your favorite drummer(s)? I notice so far nobody has mentioned two of the most tasteful and versatile drummers ever. While checking out all these other folks, be sure to spend some time with Steve Gadd and Jeff Porcaro. Or how about Bernard Purdy and Hal Blaine? Those four combined probably have more gold/platinum records than McDonald's has arches.

Re: SO, who is/are your favorite drummer(s)? I strongly agree when it comes to versatility and even elegance Steve Gadd is hard to beat. Together with Max Roach (who broke the traditional mould) they have to be my all time favourites.
When we talk about effectiveness another drummer comes to mind, Art Blakey with The Jazz Messengers , he played the best crescendo rolls ever!!
Rolls not being my strongest point, I always was in awe of that.

RT55 | I'd mentioned Steve Gadd quite a while ago, he's one of our home boys here in Rochester NY. Back in the early 70s I was taking piano lessons at Hochstein Music school in Rochester, and Steve was giving drum lessons at the school. I would always stand near his drum room and listen while I was waiting for my lessons. I believe he was an Eastman Student at the time but even back then he was phenominal. |
