I think Option describes the whole forum, and If there was only one drummer we wouldn't be here... We would be on Derek Roddy's forum!

Talking Re: Travis Barker

Hi all,

It is a good thing that we can differ in our personal preferences and voice our opininons about them. This is healthy and makes a forum an interesting place to contribute to.

What I fail to comprehend is that with so many excellent drummers to choose from, Travis is perceived to be "up there"

If you consider drum greats like Simon Phillips, Carter Beauford, and I only name two of the many that are in that league, and you would spend some time to have a look at their performances and portfolio's, the picture will become clear.

You will soon find out that Travis while handy and a master of publication and TV coverage, does not really measure up. (Oh damn I did it again!)

Cheers and happy drumming,

Harry

Re: Travis Barker

Self marketing his huge, and those that do it well are going to be looked upon as being top shelf by others, even though there may be hundreds better.

I enjoy watching Travis and he is without a doubt very talented, but he isn't in my top 20 from a skill and technique standpoint.

Re: Travis Barker

I can't hear anything exceptional in his playing but his performance style is certainly recognisable which is where he gets his rep as an amazing drummer from I think.

Re: Travis Barker

I think it's important to focus on the fact that every drummer has different strengths and weaknesses. Moreover, you can learn something from every drummer you see. No two drummers even play a basic rock pattern the same. Sure Travis' technique is at times painful to watch and he doesn't do any complex linear patterns or syncopation, but he's a hell of a show drummer. Bottom line is, that's what music fans look for.

There's a big difference between musicians and music fans. People who go to show to be entertained aren't going to think to themselves, "wow, did you see those ghost notes?!" They want a show. My drummer friends come up to me after the show and ask me what the pattern was I played on a song, but everyone else comments on the showmanship. That's what they understand. And if you want to make money as a live musician, you have to give the audience what they want.

Do I think Travis is a good technical drummer to look up to? No. But you gotta give the guy props for building an empire just on his persona.

Re: Travis Barker

I really agree with you shazzam.
I hope he buys $20,000 cymbals and hit's them like he does and cracks them so much they turn to dust.
I think the only real reason he's "Famous" is because he LOOKS good and does
cheap remixes of popular rap songs that get very old very quickly.
Even his ad in Musicians Friend catalog from May 09 has him throwing his arms
12 feet into the air to hit the snare.
I highly doubt he can pronounce "Zildjian"
He really need's some Neil Peart slapped into him.

Re: Travis Barker

True that Inferno Mr. Peart would slap with silly not to mention drum circles and circles and circles around him.
