Travis Barker

So, a lot of my friends...coupel who are/were drummers really were into him a while ago when that video of him doing a soulja boy "remix" video came out. He was the ish...now that trvs dj am thing is getting big(ger) I've started to hear more talk about him again...it's effing annoying cause there's nothing special about what he does or can do. IF people think he's amazing cause he can play a basic beats with massive arm movements that I wouldn't even consider an orchestral style...just swinging your arms and not using wrist action to hit stuff.
Anyways, just wanna know some of your guys' thoughts on travis...if you think he's utterly amazing and the best drummer ever...go ahead and believe that, you're not me but I could prolly name off a couple drummers who do the same stuff and...well if travis met them he better praise them lol.
aaron spears, gerald heyward, chris coleman.

Re: Travis Barker

THANK YOU! he's probly the most overrated drummer alive. at the same time i cant blame all the non-drummers for thinking he's the best just because of how cool Blink 182 was. but yah, i think most drummers get sick of people calling him the best drummer. there are literally thousands of drummers as good or better than him. i cant blame him either, he took his mid-level drumming skills and marketed and turned himself into a drumming icon. i'm glad he didnt lose his life tho.

Re: Travis Barker

This would be a good reason why most of the good drummers I have heard are not popular
by the masses. I think he is a good drummer at what he does. I've seen a few things he
plays and he appears very comfortable in what he does.

Many of the drummers I think are the cheese whiz have a small group following. There are
some drummers which are impressive and make the popularity poll... but it just goes to show
you that popularity has absolutely nothing to do with quality of drumming.

Popularity makes about as much sense as High School did.. ;p

Re: Travis Barker

Yea, but he's makin crazy money doing it considering he's now doing "remixes" for artists. Granted they sound the same/dam* close to the original song but with acoustic drums lol.
I liked what he did with blink..but not now. His beats are starting to repeat themselves...and his "style" or movement around teh set makes me gag and when I see him hit a cymbal I cringe and wonder how many cymbals he goes through

Travis Barker will break a few cymbals no doubt about that, his cymbal playing technique is based on show, not on the life of the cymbal. Also he got sort of a lifetime endorsement from Zildjan so no worries there.

He might be an average drummer in the eyes of many (drummers, included myself) but he is primarily a show man, the amount of businesses he is able to spin around his appearances (tatoos), awkward drumming style etc. is legedary.
He is after the big bucks and he is very successful doing it.
In business there is no subtitute for bad taste , it just sells

Cheers and happy drumming,

Harry

Re: Travis Barker

And that's what I hate. Sorta gives drumming a bad name in a sense :/ He just plays for the money now and shows off doing ish.

Hi Shazaam,

I totally agree with you!
I hate it too! Drummers already suffer from the fact they they are often been seen as being "no real musicians " like guitar players etc.
The importance of the rythem section is often overlooked, by the press, but more importantly by fellow (non drummer) musicians.
Something like "you drummers just hit a couple of drums, happy go lucky, and you'll be allright.

This has always irritatated the S**t out of me!

No talk about about groove, feel, playing in the pocket, being in fact the hub of the band.
Then a joker likes Travis comes along, parading his fake imagery , bad taste and shallowness, trying to prove the forementioned muscians right, "drummers are no real musicians"

I realize my post might be provocative, so be it, it is only my honest undiluted opinion.

Cheers and happy drumming,

Harry

Cheers

Re: Travis Barker

wow this kinda funny and EXTREMELY opinionated!!

i would definitly say he is good, but not the best. NO DRUMMER IS THE BEST!!! cuz everyone plays different styles and everyone has different opinions on this. but i will say he isnt over-rated
