Moon was an innovator, really, of a different style of drumming. He didnt play for the song, he played the song. He and the bassist were the lead instruments in the Who, not the guitar. So, was he the perfect fit for the Who? Sure! Would he have fit in with ACDC? Probably not.
The thing is, Moon had crazy skills, great triplets, always seemed to end up on the 1...
Portnoy, is possibly the most technically accomplished drummer mentioned so far. His meter is spot on, and his independance is amazing. He is on a level with Gavin Harrison, who I personally think is the most accomplished drummer playing rock today.
Harrison, Portnoy, Danny Carey...these guys arent simply concerned with speed and blast beats. they are moving time, displacing beats, and doing things that many of us just dream about.
Of course, there are no BAD drummers! Karen Carpenter was really very good! Phil Rudd is perfection, and Travis is....well I dont know what the hell he is, but if hes keeping time, moving the song, and earning his keep, then hes good!
Thats just my opinion
