Re: who do u think is the most over rated drummer/drummers? I have to eat some Crow here. I am NOT a fan of Slipknot' music. I never really have been. I found them to be gimmicky. I never found Joey J to be especially interesting either, so I didn't pay much attention to him. However, he much more than I thought. A couple of years ago, my band played a festival with Slipknot. There was warm-up kit set up in the back for us. Joey and I, and couple of other guys hung out around it most of the afternoon, goofing-off with kit, and keeping a low profile. I have to admit: I was wrong about him. The guy is an extraordinarily talented player. I still don't like his band. I'm convinced he does it for money, though. He's got jazz and fusion chops, dynamic sensitivities, and a tasteful ear. I would have never thought it before, but he actually is a quite impressive talent.
My choice for over-rated is Portnoy. I just think find him musical. He's got all the skill and ability in the world, but no taste. He's got Yngwie Malmsteen's Disease. Just because you can play 700 notes a second, doesn't mean that you should. I tried for years to appreciate his playing like it seemingly deserved. By, I cannot. It sounds like wanking to me. I don't hear tonal dynamics or rhythmic harmonies, in his playing. I just hear "Hey, check this out. I'm Awesome!". He's fast and he's technical, but he has no soul. He's all "Chops", and no "Flavor". I can't listen to it for more than 2 minutes at a time, and nor should you. It will make you stupid.
My teacher taught me that a musician needs only 2 core principals.:
1. Music is not in the notes you play, it's in the space between the notes.
2. Musical Maturity is being able to recognize when NOT to play.
That's it. $10,000 worth of lessons, and that's what I learned! (worth every penny) |
