Since when have there been alot of Slipknot fans on this forum?? Most of what I read here about Joey is bashing Slipknot, not discussions about how good he is!

Anyway... I consider Portnoy to be a quite talented drummer, but he is overrated. He simply isn't the best. I see no basis in your comment about listening to Portnoy having the ability to make you stupid, unless you mean that young, impressionable drummers who listen to him may catch the all too contagious "Yngwie Malmsteen Disease" (I found that diagnosis very amusing), and adopt the philosophy of "the more notes, the better".

Though I like Cream, I find Ginger Baker to be overrated. He's a fine player, but I'm not hearing what others seem to, who describe him as so amazing.
Tommy Lee also ridiculously overrated.
Keith Moon was one of the most naturally gifted drummers of all time-- undisciplined, yes, but always played the song, never just soloed his way through. Had terrific feel for when to come in and when to drop out. Unfortunately his life is a lesson in how to destroy your God-given talent with drugs and booze. His playing in his last years really suffered.

I gotta agree with you about Ginger Baker on that one. He's a good drummer but hes never done anything that made me say whoa hold on a sec let me here that agian, and agian and agian lol. But hey he did more then i ever have so far lol So who I am to put him down.

When looking at over rated drummers of which there are a few I always look for some evidence from another artist a bit like in an academic way then you got back up if it goes pair shaped..........

Overated is just a term used by Average drummers on other average drummers. Drummers who think they are better than professional artists... These People are not true musicians...A true musician is one that applauds all other drummers and respects the rise of some as Professional's in the industry..

Speed ,Technique, dozens of expensive lessons as a child prodigy,rich parrents, and pro tutoring don't make a good complete drummer if you never had it in you in the first place. You have to have a soul and show humanity.... ask the question there are lots of under rated drummers yes....but no Overated because why. they have made it.... and you havnt...........

Despite that point, I still believe that there are drummers who are overrated.

After all, there are actors and actresses who cannot act, there are guitarists who aren't worth their strings, there are bassists who are the same way as overrated guitarists, and there are drummers who aren't worth their sticks.

Just because they made it doesn't mean they are good; because it is not about them, it is about the band as a whole.

Here is my opinion on the overrated:

Travis: Hes good at his punk genre but he isn't what hes made out to be.

Lars: He even admitted he sucked when he first started, he does the most simple patterns. Maybe its just Metallica.

Dave Ghrol: Sorry, he does have a bit of groove and can pound the drums hard, but doesn't really do anything special/unique with Nirvana or any other things he played drums in.
