Favorite drummer right now

There are a bunch of guys out there right now who are worthy of recognition. Who's your favorite drummer?

Mine has to be Thomas Lang and just the cool stuff that he does. More than anything it's inspiring and keeps me motivated to work to his level of drum playing.

Right now it would have to be Marco Minnemann. I was just amazed when I saw him in clinic. Hes such a phenomenal player!

Charles Hayward played in Bristol recently and my jaw has only just re-joined the rest of my face having spent months on the floor.

He's not very well known but really should be, he plays solo but instead of just doing a workout around the kit he fires off samples with his feet and creates entire songs, plus he sings at the same time. While all this is going on he's doing some of the most inventive and intense drumming I've ever seen, little syncopated fills come out of nowhere and then they're gone, then he'll start using a tom in place of a snare for perhaps 3 beats and switch back when you least expect it, then into a beat that just holds and doesn't change for ages and ages. Really emotional and intuitive playing, thoroughly recommended.

While we're on the subject, he played in a band called "This Heat" in the late 70s / early 80s and any drummer would benefit from hearing their album "Deceit". In fact, any human would benefit greatly because it's like nothing else and is indescribably good.

I'm also a fan of John Mcentire and John Herndon of Tortoise, just found a (long) live video on Youtube - some great drumming and percussion work. The drumming isn't really showy, it can be quite minimal but always has a really great feel to it. Some great 2-drummer action about 12 minutes in. Check it out:

Good band.

Favorite drummers?

One of my favorite drummers is Neil Peart from Rush. I was just watching their latest dvd (Replay x3) the other day and he's just amazing! It has three separate dvds of performances from the eighties - "Exit...Stage Left", "Grace Under Pressure", and "A Show of Hands." I was looking for "Grace Under Pressure" a few months ago and couldn't find it. My boss at umgd told me they aren't available separately anymore, but this is a better deal anyway. Just goes to show their staying power that after decades of playing they are still coming out with stuff. Any other Rush fans? There are some clips of the performances on rush.com

Rush is amazing. All of the members are pretty much masters of their instruments.

Yeah, Neil Peart is just fantastic. I love the way he plays and his kits are enormously great too. Haha
