Mike Portnoy on Avenged Sevenfolds records Anyone hear the single Avenged Sevenfold's new single? It has Mike Portnoy playing drums on it. Avenged Sevenfold recently had their drummer pass away, he was awesome in his own right. But wow does Mike Portnoy bring something to this band. |

Re: Mike Portnoy on Avenged Sevenfolds records I can definitely hear some Jimmy Sullivan in there. I don't know if it's because The Rev is dead and isn't actually playing on that track and I have some psychological conflict with it, if it's that I just don't care for that song too much, or if I can really hear a difference between Portnoy's playing and Sullivan's, but it isn't quite right for me. When I hear the whole album I'll make my ultimate decision, but right now Portnoy is only doing what anybody could, and he hasn't come anywhere close to replacing The Rev. I think he might have the potential for it, but it probably is impossible so it doesn't matter.
(relatively) recent deaths in music:
Jim Chapin
Les Paul
Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan
Ronnie James Dio
Paul Gray (Slipknot, a few days ago)
All major losses except the last one. Slipknot is pretty much dead anyway
Anyway, I don't think Portnoy has brought what is needed quite yet. He has brought something, but to me it's an undesired change... maybe I'm just picky. |

Sure they softened up a lil' bit, but they're still a great band. You need to add Mike Alexander from Evile and Peter Steele from Type-O-Negative to that list as well.
And one of Jimmy's main influences was Mike Portnoy, so its not surprising you hear a bit of The Rev in there. |

Re: Mike Portnoy on Avenged Sevenfolds records Sorry, I'm just opinionated. I don't like Slipknot, even the stuff before they softened up. Regardless, from a music standpoint, I don't see Paul's death as a major loss, but in no way do I claim to know what kind of person he is or how good a man he was.
I forgot about Mike Alexander, thanks for reminding me. I don't listen to Type-O-Negative very much, so I was unaware of Peter's death. That makes 7...
Jimmy had a really diverse list of influences. Some of them are totally unxpected. |

Re: Mike Portnoy on Avenged Sevenfolds records butter you do not have a heart. You just said that Pauls death wasn't a major loss. Well here's the thing, I think if you died, there would be no major loss.
From rumors and notes on A7X's myspace, most of the drum tracks on the new record were actually The Rev's...Just what I'd heard. |

Re: Mike Portnoy on Avenged Sevenfolds records I agree with DTX; do not talk about death in such a way.
Even though I do not like Slipknot at all either, I don't believe his death to be no major loss; Slipknot fans liked him, thought he was good, and I respect that. Death is not to be talked about so loosely. It don't matter if it is from Butter or HXC; just don't talk about it.
Hell, I'm not even a fan of Avenged Sevenfold, but I still respect The Rev's death. He will be missed.
No need to get all worked up and act like kids on here; let's keep it calm, mmkay? | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
