Red face Prog drum set

If I were to buy a set for playing prog what would be the best brand, hardware, and cymbals?

Re: Prog drum set

It doesnt really matter much, its mainly about sound if you like the sound of the drums then get em. I prefer tamas, they make very high quality drums and hardware that last and dont have problems. Just dont go with anything like cannon or pulse or anything like that pretty much you get what you pay for, but you can get a good real good drum set for 300-400 musiciansfriend is selling a pearl kit for 350. For cymbals if you want something cheaper thats really good quality go with piste ive been buying them latley and their really good. For german cymbals lol.

Re: Prog drum set

For a progressive rock set I would definitely go with a Tama or a PDP because they are nice quality sets that last a LOOONG time. (My PDP, which is also my first set, has lasted me for 7 years dude. Trust me!)

As far as tom sizes and **** go, whatever pleases your ear is fine. Just make sure your bass drum is BIG...like, 24" type big. BIG. Size matters! Ha jk. But seriously.

If you really want to make an intense prog. set, look at what other prog. drummers have their kits set up like...I personally think that's the best way to go. But remember, in the end, it's about how YOU want to set it up.

Re: Prog drum set

The best all-around kit for prog drumming is a 4 piece vintage kit from Rogers or Ludwig. You need a hi-hat and splash cymbal, nothing else. For the hats, go 20". The large size will give you a great heavy sound. For the splash, get a 2 or 3" because it will look funny. Your toms should both be 14x14 and your bass should also be 14x14. The snare can be anywhere from 2x20 to 5x100. Why these strange sizes, you ask? Because these sizes are the undiscovered secrets to amazing sounding prog! Trust me, I'm a postal worker.

Heh. I am easily amused, indeed. And I don't concentrate on progressive, so I'll leave it to you...I can't believe it's not Butter!

Re: Prog drum set

The kit matters less than how you play it.

Go test some stuff out, and try and work out a balance between what sounds good and what you can afford.

You know what? If you find some weird esoteric stuff that you like, go for it! Thats the beauty of being a drummer. You could be in sears and find a frying pan that sounds good. NO ONE can rightfully tell you not to put it on your kit and call it a ride cymbal.
