I desparately need a drum set

Alright guys. The reason I joined these forums is because I need help. I'm 21 years old, and just started drumming. I need a drum set to practice on because "pads" or "air drumming" or whatever is just not the same.

Basically I need some ideas on how I can get a free (or virtually free) drum set. I have no money, just got married, so I can't afford a new acoustic set right now. Well, I can afford one probably, but my new wife doesn't approve of spending money on one right now. She agreed though, that if I got one for free that would be awesome.

I know this story is farfetched, don't worry about it. Ultimately, yes, I feel like there has to be SOME way of getting a free kit. Just some starter one at least. Can you guys give me any advice?

Are you hoping to stay within the law??

Unless you get some lucky deal or inherit, the only way to get free drums is stealing.

Virtually free, like under $100??
That might not be too hard, check eBay for used sets. You won't be getting anything quality at all, but drums are drums, I guess, as opposed to air drumming.

My advice: either get something super cheap to play while you save for something nice, or just save for something nice.

Hmm stealing may just but an option lol. But, yeah if it was like $50 for just a crap set that I can maybe fix up a little so that it's playable that would work. Basically I need something that is just yeah, better than playing on pads and actually has sound, just so I have something until I can save up and move out and then get my dream set after graduation. Ebay isn't a bad idea. Thanks!

logicalinsanity, welcome to DSC. The honeymoon ain't over yet. Perhaps a Salvation Army store may have something for you. Or perhaps a church, some of them have a bulletin board to make others prayer be answered.
But you gotta pray really hard and not with one eye opened.

Stealing is a really bad idea and most drums are registered with a number inside the shells.

So you also mentioned an old beat up kit. You'll still have to spend some dough.

The best idea is to be patient and save some money and get something you can invest on. Even if you get your hands on a so called free kit, with today's economy, you'll still have to put some doe into them.

Take your time and get something decent. After all, a drum kit is an investment and an expensive hobby.

Re: I desparately need a drum set

I live near a big city so I run the gammut of pawn shops and second hand thrift shops about once a month to grab whatever cheap stuff I can. I rarely find drums at Sally Annes or the like -- once I got a floor tom for $10 but that was pretty lucky. The more likely place to fiind a practice kit is at a pawn shop. I regularly see kits for $200.00 (Canadian). To get it "free" would mean you'd have to swap something of value for the drums, like jewelry or some electronics you don't need. Good luck!

We have a "freecycle" website in my area where people give things away for free but, again, I've never seen drums listed there.

I donated my practice pad set once to a local drum shop so they could give it to a deserving student who didn't have any practice gear. What did they do? They sold it, the crappers. I think if I was to give away drums now, I'd "advertise" on this website. So you've done a good thing to speak up. Maybe someone will come forward for you!

Wellllll my boyfriend is selling his set...not sayin, just sayin. I'm thinking about selling mine since I can't play it, but there is no way in hell that I would sell my set for under $100 Baha.

Venom my dear...just why is it that you can't play your set? I haven't been around the forum for awhile, but I am shocked to hear you say you are not playing. Is it because of your not so recent injury or what?

Venom is having a little trouble tuning her air drums.

According to her prior post, she's more into Marching Drums and Marimba type of percussion instruments.
