Help , advice .

I am thinking of treating myself to a new kit , just the shells preferably rather than a complete kit + hardware as Iam happy with the hardware I have . At the moment I am playing a oldish Pearl ELX ( at least I think it is ) but I have made a few a changes i.e , got rid of the bass drum tom holders and replaced my 1st tom on a snare stand which allows it to be placed lower and nearer my snare , which suits my playing style , my 2nd tom is mounted from a cymbal stand via a clamp , which again allows a more versatile placing options . I am happy with the set up and the drums in general but feel that its time I updated and maybe invested in some maple shells as Ive heard they are very nice sounding with the right heads etc .....but I was thinking I could save some money by replacing the heads on the pearl ( remo amb ) on batter , original pearl on res , any suggestions ? Thanks .

What is your main music focus or genre (rock, jazz, country, etc) and budget? What are you going to do with the kit – personal entertainment, studio, tour, local clubs, etc?

Every brand has mid-level kits that are constructed with maple shells – and the prices vary from brand to brand and dealer to dealer. I personally prefer DW - in your case you look at the lower level DW Pacific Brand - the hardware isn't as nice, and there are a few shell differences. But the Pacific Maple Shell kits sound great.

I hear Mapex gives a lot of bang for the buck - on this brand consult with Butter (on this forum). I’ve played a couple of Mapex professional kits as part of a Backline, but really don't know much about them.

Then there is Pearl, Tama, Yamaha, Ludwig, Gretsch, Rogers, REMO (which I don’t care for) – for my money I would stick with Tama, (DW) Pacific, Pearl or MapexYamaha, Rogers, and Gretsch tend to be a bit pricey, and Ludwig can be inconsistent. And there are also many small companies out there, but most companies (big and small) use Keller Maple Shells.

Re: Help , advice .

Thanks for reply and the links , I will be mostly playing rock / punk , the kit will be used on a weekly basis and I will also be doing some recording with it now and again . My budget is around £900 .

I have checked the links you kindly forwarded and I do like the look of the Tama superstar hyperdrive , this kit is not supplied in maple but the design would suit set up preferences and reviews ive read seem to like the overall sound . I would be interested to hear any other thoughts people may have on this kit .

Once again thanks .
