Re: How to make a set sound like I want it to sound? Well, let's say you Can play, you've gone thru different heads, and tunings, and tried different sticks, and muffling, and all that. So now you've got a sound that You like.
But, that sound may not be what the microphone hears, not what the engineer hears, and not what those dancing maniacs want to hear. If they Can hear you. Drumming is not usually done in a vacuum, unless you only play in your practice room. What do they sound like to the rest of the band? Or the soundman? Or in the back of the room?
Unfortunately, the same kit will not please everyone. Your drums can be set up to sound great where you practice, and sound like **** in the club. There is so much that goes into "the sound."
In small rooms, I like to have someone else play while I stand in back, and listen. That's how I discovered that my favorite tuning did not cut through the amplified instruments. Tuning the toms up higher helped a lot, but didn't sound good practicing alone. Change the situation, now a soundguy is saying to tune 'waaay down' so he can control sound thru his board. Now there is less bounce to the heads, harder to play!
In the end, when other musicians come up and tell you your drums sounded great, that's when your kit sounds "like I want it to sound."
