Question How to make a set sound like I want it to sound?

Hi fellow drummers!

I have been wondering how to get a really... It's hard to describe... Slim or tight sound out of a drum set. Does it highly depend on who the set's manufacturer is, or does it depend on how I tune it?

Thanks.

When you refer to a tight sound, are you referring to the typical sound many older style jazz drummers use?

Example:

Well... Kinda

It is a pretty "cut off sound", I do not know how to describe it A pretty short and deep sound on the toms.

I'll try and find an example.

*EDIT* It's pretty much like this one?
Nah just kiddin'. He's just an awesome drummer! :-)

*EDIT AGAIN* Allright so I found this pretty nice drumbattle:
It's kinda like the second drummers kit. I don't think he's the best of the thrre, but his kit sounds damn good in my ears!

Hey dude its sounds like your after a fusion type of sound so very little or zero overtone. You can try dampening using duct tape sticky gel dampers you just throw on the heads that i great for studio and live miked and tuning remember too tight on the top heads and you will loose feel and control over the drum and the stick will repel back at you ...I would go small 18" bass drum picallo snare drum thin and thinner the better toms so look at thickness of ply and deepness of the shell....hollow fibre pillow in the bass drum try different amounts until your happy.....what kit have you got......anything is possible with any kit...

Well, let's say you Can play, you've gone thru different heads, and tunings, and tried different sticks, and muffling, and all that. So now you've got a sound that You like.
But, that sound may not be what the microphone hears, not what the engineer hears, and not what those dancing maniacs want to hear. If they Can hear you. Drumming is not usually done in a vacuum, unless you only play in your practice room. What do they sound like to the rest of the band? Or the soundman? Or in the back of the room?
Unfortunately, the same kit will not please everyone. Your drums can be set up to sound great where you practice, and sound like **** in the club. There is so much that goes into "the sound."
In small rooms, I like to have someone else play while I stand in back, and listen. That's how I discovered that my favorite tuning did not cut through the amplified instruments. Tuning the toms up higher helped a lot, but didn't sound good practicing alone. Change the situation, now a soundguy is saying to tune 'waaay down' so he can control sound thru his board. Now there is less bounce to the heads, harder to play!
In the end, when other musicians come up and tell you your drums sounded great, that's when your kit sounds "like I want it to sound."
