Touring:Tacking care of your kit

Ok so First I would like to say that this is the first time I am using this site and I am sorry if there is another blog here with this information that I missed.

My question is does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep your kit healthy on tour. The last time I went out was last summer and we went as south as Alabama, North to New York and Michigan, and west to Wyoming. So as you can imagine our gear hit all kinds of weather, temperatures, and humidity. We had a snare drum warp really bad and it seriously scares me for suture tours. I have read that drums are best at 45-55 percent humidity with a temperature between 65-80 degrees.

We are planning on touring through winters as well so I was wondering what some of yous do before I go pick up my new kit. I thought of getting SKB cases and guitar humidifiers for each case. Although that wont help during humid summers.

any suggestions would be awesome!

Thanks

Rob

SKB cases are great for touring and storage. Another factor is that the high end drums are sprayed with an inner lining to keep the humidity out of them.
My kit has a silver color lining inside, but I don't remember what it's called at the moment. It was a youtube on how Gretsch drums are made.

I believe you ment guitar dehumidifiers that prevents them from warping, which would help, but only to a certain point. It's not so much the ambience humidity, it's the sudden change in temperature that causes condensation within the drums or even within the drum cases for that matter.

How Gretch drums are made.

You'll notice that Gretsch silver sealer inside the drums to keep the moisture out. I've emailed them to find out what they use for the inner sealer. I'll get back to you when they respond.

In the old days we used a thing film of tar watered down with kerosine as a sealer.

Thanks man I'll check those out. But I did mean humidifier but I was implying using it in the winter with the dryer weather and I wasn't aware they made dehumidifiers (I am assuming that was the link because I haven't had a chance to check it out.)

But with the rapid change: I could totally see that and that would made seance with the snare drum. It happened when we drove from the east to the west (towards Colorado). It now has a pretty nasty bow in it : /

FYI: I am looking to upgrade to the Pork Pie Little Squealer kit so I don't think they use that lining but I will looking into it. I guess the new question in how do I protect it from the sudden changes while we are on the road.

And I just checked out the Planet Waves site. That looks like it will help a lot and I think that will take care of the humidity issue. Now it's just the temperature issue.

Pork Pie are good quality kits.

As I mentioned before, all drum companies that make high end kits, use some sort of sealer on the inside of their products.

It's the cheap kits that come here from overseas that make low quality kits.

Good luck on your tour and happy trails.
