Help refinishing delema

SO im refinishing my drumset a 90s modle tama rockstar. i have cut the 12 and 13 head tom shells down to 12x4.5, 12,6.3, 13x8 and 13x5 now im faced with a delima do i keep the 2 short cut off pieces and use them as shallow toms and have no bottom heads on my set, or do i sacrifice these pieces for future snare prodjects and use their hardware for the res heads what do u think.

Wow, you're brave. I've heard of refinishing an old kit but I never would have thought about cutting the shells.

To answer your question, just mount heads on the pieces and see what they sound like. I've got some Tama Imperialstars which don't have reso heads and they sound amazing. I prefer that punchy sound and they're way easier to tune with only one head! But maybe if the shell is too skinny you won't get a pleasing sound with only the batter head. I'd recommend a coated head that really rings.

You can also get into Custom Made Hand Drums with those scraped pieces.

They are quite popular and an idea for the middle eastern music genre.

Re: Help refinishing delema

SO yeah i cut all the drums down and got all the hardware installed slapped on some evan g2s and WOW! was i surprised even without new heads these drums sound verry good in my opinion. i got alot more lower range out of the 12x4.5 and 12x6.5 toms than i had exspected definatly not that thunder tom sound i had before but not so high that it was a huge difference. i was looking for a cleaner more pronounced sound and thats wat i got. not to mention the 16'' and 18'' bass drums i made out of floor toms cut through like nothing else i have played. As for being brave for cutting the shells. i dont know what posessed me to do it other needing space. Im a tennor player and ive always felt that if i could mount all my toms super low and flat i would be able to play cleaner with this new kit i feel like im strapping on a set of quints everytime i set down at my kit. i will post some pics of everything verry soon.
