Buying a drumkit for gigging

Hey guys, My band is starting to get a bit more serious and want to start gigging. I have bought 2 drumkits in my time, but I have never really gone shopping for one in which I can use for gigging. (If you are interested I own a Pearl Forum and an Electric drumkit, but I don't really like the idea of using them for gigs).

I'm not planning to ask you guys a specific drumkit to buy, but there are a few questions I would like answered.

1. How much price range do you think I will be looking at? Do you generally get what you pay for? I've found with a lot of things in life that you will pay double for something in particular which you can get for half the price from something else.

2. I'm planning to use it as a gig drumkit... I really don't want to break it early, so I was planning to keep my drumkit bagged up most of the time and just practice jam with my mates on my electric drumkit. Anyone here play gigs + use there kit as a jam kit with good results?

I'm looking to spend around 3 grand... I'm not sure if that's to much or to little. Anyways, thanks alot!

Re: Buying a drumkit for gigging

Oh ya, 3 grand is plenty of money to get a high end kit and cymbals. Of course, it depends on how many drums and cymbals you need. But my advice is to do your research into quality kits, go to a store to play them to find out the sound you like, and then comb the used sites on the internet till you find the perfect deal for you. Buy the drums and cymbals separately if you need to. The quality will be there because drummers take care of their high end kits and with new skins they'll sound great. Used cymbals have better tone than new ones to some extent. I wish I had 3 grand. You'll need cases and cymbal bags so budget for them. Get a strong throne and a mat to set your kit on and lots of sticks.

It's not hard on drums to use them for practising too, just a pain to tear down and set up. But your buddies might get thrown by the difference in sound between an electronic and acoustic kit so you might not want to surprise them just at gigs.
