Drum set dilema

First time on site. Looking forward to using this site. Question: Ready to purchase either a 3 piece Taye studio maple set for $1050 (all I can afford right now) or I came across a 7 piece Gretsch catilina maple set for $799. Should I hold out for the Taye set or will the Gretsch set be a pretty good maple set?
My dream is a Tama Starclassic Bubinga/Birch but not enough cash right now. My style is rock to playing in a miked setting at a big church. Thanks for your help. Joe

Re: Drum set dilema

Joe,
Taye and Gretsch are both good names. My drum teacher has Taye and says he thinks they're the best drums made.

What would you prefer -- 3 or 7 pieces? Which set sounds best to you? Are you buying cymbals too, and have you budgeted for them? What about a higher quality USA-made Gretsch set with just 3 or 4 pieces?

Bottom line: play the drums, and listen to someone else play them. How do they sound to you?

Good hunting!

This Gretsch kit is made of Caoba wood. Depending on what genre of music you play, makes a huge differece.

These are great for jazz. They weigh allot.

Re: Drum set dilema

Grestch do a catalina maple and they are a good set of drums. They have thin shells and a 45degree bearing edge so despite gretsch being synonymous with warm tones, this kit should be as bright and rockin as any other.

Tune it, play it, if you like it, buy it.
