Drum kits - Please Help!!

Hello, I am from the UK and I am planning to take up the drums as I've had a few lessons with someone and really enjoyed it.

The only problem is, I'm going to need an electric kit because I can't be making a racket with all my housemates and neighbours about.

My teacher is only familiar with non-electrical kits.. therefore if anyone could help me out I'd be very greatful.

So the questions are:

What is the best electrical drum kit in your opinion? And can I attach headphones so as to avoid making a noise?

This is a great question for DTX as he micro analized every electronic kit out there in search of the perfect electronic kit.

That's overstating it a bit, Der, but I know a little. I don't know all the electronic kits, but I would recommend Yamaha over Roland or Pearl.

Two great electronic drum sound modules on the market are the Roland TD-20 and the Yamaha DTX III, but they cost plenty. One great thing about Yamaha is that they use sounds from the DXT III module in their cheaper modules -- really great sounds!

I also thought Yamaha rubber heads had a more realistic rebound than Roland's mesh heads.

I researched Pearl electronic but never played a set. My drum teacher did, however, and he didn't care for the Pearl electronic kit at all (he had played Roland electronic previously). Can't remember his specific reasons.

I think even in the lower price ranges you'll get good sounds from a Yamaha kit, and the sounds are what it's all about. Yes, you can plug headphones into the Yamaha module, and I believe you can with all electronic drumsets.

I played $3,000 Roland and Yamaha electronic kits side by side, and I thought Yamaha won hands down. Great sounds, more realistic heads. I upgraded the bass drum pedal and throne that came with my kit, but other than that, I am very pleased with Yamaha quality.

In the drum shops around here, I see plenty of electronic kits set up, waiting for you to try them out. That's something you definitely want to do. Your ears might like different sounds than mine.

Have fun making your choice!

Agree!..I've owned both top brands (roland & yamaha) and still play both the td-20sx and DTXtreme III/900 regularly...the yamaha's sounds are better IMO...another brand to look at as well is the 2box drumit 5 (if it's available where you live)...from what I've heard of it (you tube clips) it sounds very promising as well...
