At my local music store, as well as my daily journey through Craigslist and eBay, all the drumsets I see are dull solid colors, and every now and then I'll run into a poorly done fade with colors that are the same but in different shades. I hate plain black as well as wine red (the color of my first ever drumset). I love finishes that are applied a bit thinner than average so that they show the wood grain. Also, I love finishes that sparkle or have glass underneath it, letting them shine under good lights.
My favorite finish of all time is Mapex's Platinum Sparkle
