This is an age old question that really has no wrong answers but I will give you some advice that will help you decide which one to choose, or at least narrow it down a bit.
First rule is don't get caught up in the hype (this goes for just about everything in the retail world). Just because someone says a pedal is good or bad doesn't make it so, even if it is a high profile pro.
If you are just starting to play a drum set for the first time then don't look to spend a ton of money because your improving ability in the near future will tend to dictate your needs. The best advice I can give you (and this is the exact same for deciding which cymbals to buy also) is to head down to your local drum shop or Guitar Center and try everything you can and make your choice based on what feels the best (or sounds the best in the case of cymbals). From there you can buy new or you can search online classifieds like craigslist for a used one.
