bass pedal spring tension

how far do you guys have your bass pedal spring stretched to? I like to have my stretched all the way as it gives me more bounce but i think that would be bad for the spring...does that matter?

of course having it stretched out all the way will stretch it out and make it less effective over time. But if thats what you're comfortable with and that's what you like then i dont think it's much of a problem. itll take a while for it to lose all the springyness and you can always replace the spring for dirt cheap

yeah i agree with tk.. just play the way you want and let the equipment take care of itself. I have my spring in medium tension.. too low i dont get enough bounce, too high it's just hard to control.. gotta find that happy medium. i also like to do most of the work myself and keeping tension low will make the legs work harder and develop more chops

yeah, its that medium that is good. too much and your pedal is far too bouncy... i use a single pedal thats on medium tention. I can go quite fast on it... I can probably do 16ths at around 140bpm with it.

I like my spring tension loose. Not to the point where it falls back after a stroke, but just a little tighter than that. I dont know why, thats just what I'm comfortable with.

Re: bass pedal spring tension

Beginners should never have too much tension in my opinion...It can lead to relying on the bounce too much before you learn to actually 'play' each part of your triplet or double hit or syncopated thud after the snare....
I have mine medium tension, trying funky bass drum stuff on tight springs requires a lot more energy and can take away from a natural groove. But hey I play with swing so that's what suits me....

My thought on this process...

I have my springs tighter than a virgins daughter...

I haven't broken one spring yet.

Talking Re: bass pedal spring tension

Hi Travisfan,

I like my spring tension real loose, contrarary to popular believe you can still play real fast, using the bounce of the batter head. Simon Phillips plays the kick pedal real loose, talking about fast pedal work!!
Also when playing "softish" you can even get a double bounce out of one kick.

Cheers, and Happy drumming'

Harry
