I've currently got a pearl dr80 on order. I used to have a gibraltar rack for everything and the placement factor was awsome, but set up and tear down was a nightmare.

That's why I'm going for the dr80. No slipping, no misplacements and at the end of the show, I fold it up and throw it in the wagon. It's also the cheapest complete rack I've found on the market and I've spoken to people who've used it for years and never had any worries.

Thumbs up icon rack

its the best rack out there. (I think)
it will not slip because is square. The round ones slip after a few months
its easy to brake down at end of night
it will not shake like the round ones do
mics clap on it fine
i been having mine for 5 years now
its all in good shape still
it never let me down

What are some of the advantages of the Pearl Icon rack over the Gibraltar rack?
The icon rack has square tubing so there's no chance of your clamps slipping anywhere. Some prefer the gibraltar as it allows for all placement possibilities but unless you are terry bozzio you shouldn't have any problems with your exsisting hardware.

Unlike the pearl dr80, the icon rack allows you change the height of the horizontal bars, but I don't think you can fold it up after the show which is why I'm going for the dr80. Unlike some people I don't have a techie!

I just recently got my first rack. It is an older gilbrater but I see what you are talking about everything slipping on it. It is a lot more work than what I bargened for, and I think the thing that gets me the most is if I dont have everything postioned just right it will just fall over by it's self. like if I just have my toms on there.

I went to my local drum shop in memphis about 2 years ago and was looking to get that pearl rack because it looked like a good deal but I was told that I would have to change over to a lot of pearl hardwear on my toms and buy only pearl stuff for it and when I added it all up it was going to be a lot cheaper just to buy somthing else, but if already are using pearl then it wasnt as exspinsive to get the gear for it.

Well, the rack comes with four clamps that can only grab 5/8" pipe because most pearl gear comes in 5/8". However, most tama and yamaha does too and the other 5 clamps I've ordered are only $10 extra and will fit anything.

Good luck with your gibraltar. Just make sure you've got memory locks on the supporting clamps or you're in for a tough time.

But for the 5 piece guy, it think its a real waste if you're just playing at home and you wanna by a rack... If you have 7 cymbals... just place them normally, if you re-assemble your set, just deal with the heights and everything with memory locks. position changes are sometimes good. Rather then just having the cymbal at a place u usually do, you have it something like 2" away makes you more alert.

If you're just playing at home, totally, don't bother with the rack. But if you're getting out and playing some shows, I'd seriously consider it. It can be a real time and size saver if done right.
