Re: 2 Bass drums or double bass pedal?

I'm not sure if I've posted on this thread, but I've totally given up the second bass drum. I find I play better on the one and carrying it around is a pain. Also i've not yet met a sound guy with two mics for bass drum so one usually gets lost in the mix at shows.

I didn't actually find that the second drum took up that much room. I've fit onto some pretty small rises, it's really all about the playing.

As several have stated ,there are restrictions in some clubs. I am currently a house drummer. If a good long term tour comes along that will change. The club did allow me to build my own permanent drum riser, since the owner is a musician and built the club and stage to accommodates bands, instead of visa versa the stage is quite large and well lighted.

do you find that your slave slips away, mine does and i usually stop them with my hi hat, unless I'm using my rack (which I have been using lately). I have heard of using a clamp made by tama, that prevents the pedal from slipping (now commonly used on Demon drives).

Re: 2 Bass drums or double bass pedal?

One Of The Biggest difficulties with using a double pedal is getting The placement on your beaters just right. In a double bass configuration you set your beaters to strike the hot spot and your done. You get good tone, good action, a little sweeter sound. With the double pedals your going to have to tweak the placement until you get a good tonal balance.
I switched to a double pedal after losing my kit in a van fire on the road, simply because of the expense of replacing my monster kit. I am quite accustomed to it now and like the easier setup, However; If i'm using the left to play counter accents against the beat I really miss the full effect you get with a second bass.

As To Slippage my left pedal has two long large strips of commercial grade velcro on the bottom plate. My biggest difficulty is getting it to let go of the carpet when I tear down.

Re: 2 Bass drums or double bass pedal?

I have both and it doesn't really matter to me . I can play a single bass with one pedal and make it sound like a double pedal . The advantage of a double pedal is i don't have to work as hard........lol

On my Sonor kit I have the combination of a double pedal plus single pedal on my double bass kit. I can be on the hats and do bass triplets and just be creative

Re: 2 Bass drums or double bass pedal?

Having played double bass sets years ago, and then more recently playing with a double pedal single bass, I'd say there is a definite stage presence that goes with a big double bass set. But your points are valid, as far as set up, tuning, and carrying around a larger set. It's pretty awesome to see a guy like ian Paice from Deep Purple play "Fire Ball" with his single bass set. The bottom line: it's a real personal preference. If cost and space aren't an issue, I'd go with a double bass set, with kicks of at least 22".

Re: 2 Bass drums or double bass pedal?

Both of them have their advantages and their disadvantages! The double bass pedal is much more practical but the sound of the one and the other kick are not exactly the same because they do not hit at the same place of the bass drum!On the other hand the double bass drum needs much more space and is dificult to tune at the same tone! But if you can achieve it the sound is much more better! Also if you are used to play on a double pedal it will be a litle bit dificult to play on adouble bass drum!
