| | Mapex4Ever, welcome to the forums... You really sound like a Mapex advertisement there but you did have some good information in there.
I didn't know Sonor was owned by Mapex. When did this happen and why? |

| | Thank you Russ!!! Well I was just stating facts is all. Do you remember Sonor's of the '90's and how expensive they were? Especially if you want something equal to tadays Designer series???? Well, that high priced, out of touch with reality way of thinking put them up for sale. KHS industries had purchased Sonor 2 years ago. Now, that does not mean that the Delites and S-Class made in Germany will change much, it just means that Sonor is no longer it's own company. Sure, Mapex (KHS) will lower prices and make them more competitive. Have you seen the new Sonor's lately?? Same finishes and price points now. The 3005 is the near equivilent to the Mapex Pro M 100% maple shell, minus the virgin shell the Pro M boasts. The 3003 is the brother to the M series with 100% birch shell. You will see many many things which are similar between Sonor and Mapex sets from now on. By the way, the top 2 guys from Tama are now working for Mapex .......... so watch for some Tama ideas to be thrown in soon. |

Re: Tama vs. Mapex? I didn't realise the mapex pro M came in 100% maple
or that mapex offered a lifetime warranty...meh..mapex and pearl both
I have to admitt the black panther snares are by far exellent value for money. I bought a black panther birdseye a few months back and it is amazing, I take it everywhere with me, i take it too the cinema and practice my snare drumming during trailers.
..im banned from a lot of cinemas. :S |

Re: Tama vs. Mapex? Of everything I have ever owned Yamaha has had the best customer service I've ever known. When I was a kid I bought a Tama kit, 2 months later the tom arm snapped and the tom bounced of the bass nicking the s!@# out of the shell and tom. Tama basically said, "haha, nothing we can do, play lighter". Sold them that day (actually traded them taking a hit) and went to a pearl set that was just ok, nothing special. Of Slingerland (yes, I'm old) Ludwig (way before Selmer) Tama, Pearl, and old Premier, Yamaha has had the best for me. Pure personal choice though. Enjoy the lit and post up some pics and opinions. |

Re: Tama vs. Mapex? If I could jump in, I have owned Tama SC, Sonor Delite, Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute, Pearl Masters MMx, DW Collectors and now a Mapex.. and I can offer this.. They are all good. I owned all the top end models from each company. I now have a Mapex Orion, and without question, they are as good as any. They sound fantastic, the finish is superb, they recorded extremely well. It is kind of silly when one person says one is the best. What they are talking about is the brand they prefer because either his/her hero plays the name, or fell subject to great marketing... Of course you sink a lot of money into a kit, you want to believe your's is the best- it's human nature. But no one's is the best, they are all good. Tama, Pearl to me is just that mass produced name that every joe out there plays, Yamaha seemed to definately be a step up, and Sonor/DW was really at the top. Anyone who says Mapex is not as good, well, is either a 15 year old still learning, or just someone flat out lacking knowledge or unwilling to study up on other brands because his set is the best of course! |

Re: Tama vs. Mapex? i really don't know much about either brand, i've always used ludwig. i don't know where you get your drums, but i suggest you buy online. try to get them through the factory, they are much cheaper, that's what i always do. it can save you hundreds of dollars. good luck. |

Re: Tama vs. Mapex? Dear Confounded, Tama makes quality drums. You could check out the Tama Superstar. Roughly speaking, they're a thousand less than the Starclassic Bubinga, maybe more. Go to Musician's Friend online and check them out for price.
I seem to recall Mapex winning some recognition lately, but I can't remember for what.
Most drums are well made these days. You've got to find drums in your price range and play them. What sounds and feels good? If you don't notice a difference, why buy the more expensive set?
This might be an opportunity to try out a number of new sets to work on getting a little more comfortable with change. We need women durmmers. Happy exploring! |

Re: Tama vs. Mapex? both are great....I played mapex Saturn at my friends place, incredible sound and feel. Currently I own a TAMA rockstar, I bought being its second owner and it is also a good kit, but it really took me a long time to get skin combinations right on it and it was a head ache to tune but when I did get tuning and skins right, it sounded marvelous.
I recommend you guys taking a look at "Sleishman" drums...they are an Australian company and I have fallen completely in love with their drums, they look great, sound great, awesome to tune, the toms are free floating (which means nothing is bolted to the toms)...AND I MEAN NOTHING .......... their OMEGA series is now their mid range series and it is really affordable. CHECK EM OUT YA'LL Sleishman is definitely my next drum set. |

Re: Tama vs. Mapex? I have a Tama Superstar HyperDrive 6-piece and I love it.
The shell quality and hardware quality is top notch.
You'll get diecast rims and those sound amazing on toms.
I would stick with Tama but Starclassic is pricey.
Although Mapex high end kits are amazing also. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
