Re: Tama vs. Mapex?

I wanted a Tama Rockstar 8 piece for a while, then i wanted a Mapex Horizon. They are both good quality makers, who produce great kits, however, i've found for the price, Mapex are a better buy.

That's not to say Tama isn't a good brand, because they are, they are great, they are just slightly more expensive.

Re: Tama vs. Mapex?

I own a Mapex Meridian Maple kit. I love it. Until I played these drums, I was a Tama guy. I almost bought the Superstar HyperDrive kit from Tama, but like I said, once I played the Mapex kit, I was sold. I find Mapex far superior for the price.

Re: Tama vs. Mapex?

The Mapex Saturn is a good kit for the money. You can find a 6 piece kit for around 1300.00 on the net. I have a 2008 7 piece Yamaha maple custom set and a 6 piece 2010 Gretsch USA Custom set. I have also owned Sonor Designers, DW Collectors Series and Yamaha Birch Custom Absoluts. All these kits were very expensive. I played the Mapex Saturns at my local drumshop and was very impressed with the sound and all around quality. Remember one thing a good drummer can make the cheapest set sound great.

Re: Tama vs. Mapex?

I use the Tama Rockstar pro's power drums with EC2 coated topside and the new Evans reso's bottom side with Aquarian kick 2 on bass and I'll tell they are as good as many higher end drums Ive played. Mahogany/basswood shells with these heads make these power drums resonate very well. Heard Mapex birchwood drums are a different sound. more bass to the sound which is a good thing. Pearl EXR use birchwood and they sound very deep. Especially the 18" floor tom. Nice sound. Concidering the Mapex myself soon.

Re: Tama vs. Mapex?

Buying a drum set for a beginner is one of those times it matters the most. Several professional rock music drummers share their recommendations for buying the first drum set for a young rocker. They all agreed that one of the most important considerations is the "throne," which is what a drum chair is called.
