Acrolites

I believe that they're snares made by Tama but they're a pretty hot commodity.. what's the deal and why are they so popular

malletjazz is on a distinguished road
...and they're popular because they sound good (sometimes great - aluminum is a great shell material), and can be had very inexpensively when bought second-hand. It's one of the best "bang for your buck" instruments you'll find - for $100 or less, you can get your hands on a drum that will work well in a variety of musical situations.

The keystone-badge Acrolites from the 1960s tend to be the most collectible. For my money, tho, the Black Galaxy Acrolites (a.k.a. "Blacrolites") sound the best of the bunch, altho the sound has stayed fairly consistent over the years.

How would it compare to the sound of a birch or maple or any wood shell? Does acrolite refer to any aluminum snare, or is it specific only to Ludwig?
