Drum rugs?

Where do you put your drum set? I know there are rugs made specifically for drums, but is it worth the investment? When I used to play a gig on solid concrete tiles, the drums would always slip forward when I hit the bass drum and it was very annoying. It's not much trouble when your drums are on carpet but do you guys use something to put under your drums to save your floors/carpet and add traction to your drums?

$15 carpet (about 3'x5') purchased at an office supply store. All I need is something big enough to accommodate the legs of the hi-hat stand, the bass drum, and at least one leg on my throne.

Dude, go to a local carpet layer and if you can't find a piece in his skip, just ask and he'll gladly give some stuff he's ripped out for nothing. That's what I've got under my kit. I take it everywher with my drums and other drummers are always surprised and asking me to borrow it. My advice, Be Prepared!

Hm that's a good idea. I think the generic stuff would be just as a good as a "drum rug"

I use a Crash Pad. It has a block of wood built into it and weighted corners. I guess they were right when they said it completely eliminates "drum walking". I can play on any surface and never fear the drums might move forward. For $25 it's worth it.

I just use a old carpet. There are these rubber mesh things that are around now. it comes in a roll so you can just lay it all over your drum bass. It kills the movement. but these rubber meshes wear out. So buy 3 or 4 rolls. I can't remember the name, but its japanese. Its not really drum material but i used it before i got my living room carpet into my drum room. Most super marts should have them.

I totally agree. You can't assume that every venue will have a suitable floor for a drumkit, even thought they damn well should! I've turned up to many gigs to find a highly polished wood floor and no rug. At one show my bass drum ended up literally out of reach, I called over one of the techs while I was playing and he just couldn't understand what the problem was. The fact that I was stretching my leg to get to the pedal and couldn't even reach it then should have given him a clue! Fool.

I always carry a rug now. Also - here's a tip - carry a length of fairly heavy guage chain that's long enough to attach to both your bass drum spurs and thread through the legs of your stool. That way, the bass drum can't move even if it wants to.
